PDXV is a new band of top jazz musicians in Portland, OR. Personnel are: Dick Titterington β trumpet, Rob Davis β sax, Greg Goebel β piano, Dave Captein β bass, & Todd Strait β drums. PDXV Vol. 1 is the bandβs first release; a live recording of this great jazz quintet performing a concert at The Old Church Nov. 14, 2006.PDXV has been said to be fresh and innovative, yet it sounds like the band has been playing together for years. 5 individuals contributing outstanding skill talent and artistry, to jointly craft each masterpiece as a single entity.More about the band:The band came together originally to be a part of a series of concerts at Portland State University in the fall of 2005. Although they played only one rehearsal and one 50 minute set, they all realized there was something special about the sound of this group. It really is, as they say, "more than the sum of its parts". The material they have been playing is representational of jazz standards written by jazz musicians (as opposed to the writing of the Tin Pan Alley composers). Seems like there's been somewhat of a shift in recent history more toward the great vocal standards, which are indeed well worth playing, but not exactly the reason they took up playing jazz on their respective instruments. What about those sides of Joe Henderson, Kenny Dorham, LeeMorgan, and the myriad of other great small jazz ensemble recordings of the mid to late 20th century that many jazz instrumentalists listened to until the stylus wore through the vinyl? That's the material PDXV plays. The band name came simply from needing to name a computer file. Since PDX is the Portland airport initials and the Roman numeral V means five, it just seemed like the way to go. By the way, it is pronounced PDXVee (as in V8)... just so you know.
PDXV: Rob Davis (soprano saxophone); Dick Titterington (flugelhorn); Greg Goebel (piano); Dave Captein (bass instrument); Todd Strait (drums).

Vol 1 album
$6.39 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.

Vol 1 album
$10.05 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more ...

| | Dizzy Gillespie Birks Works: The Verve Big-Band Sessions CDs (1995)
Vol 1 songs
$17.29 By the mid-1950's, when this Norman Granz production, BIRKS WORKS, was recorded, Dizzy Gillespie's big band had become a jazz force. Talent-wise on a par with the Count Basie and Duke Ellington bands, Dizzy's outfit was a little freer and open to the latest possibilities. With such fiery young players as Lee Morgan and Billy Mitchell in his horn section, and Chalie Persip rolling underneath them on drums, there's a dense musical tension in play here. The performance of a young Quincy Jones on trumpet, contributing to "Jessica's Day," and Melba Liston's soaring trombone on Claude Debussy's "My Reverie," are noteworthy.
Included in this collection are such classics as "Autumn Leaves" and "I Can't Get Started," along with famed Gillespie numbers, among them the seductive "A Night in Tunisia." Gillespie is a great front man, and plays in exemplary fashion on tracks such as "Dizzy's Blues." His trumpet work is big and lyrical, and takes no prisoners.
Live Recording
Recorded at Coastal Recording and WOR Recording Studio, New York between 1956 and 1957. Originally released as three separate LP's. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff, Marshall W. Sterns and an interview with Benny Golson, Kenny Washington and Charli Persip.
