| | Brandi Carlile The Story CD Brandi Carlile Discography of CDs
Brandi Carlile is a singer-songwriter who truly deserves the title. Blessed with a beautiful voice, a keen sense of melody, and a penchant for smart, evocative lyrics, Carlile writes songs that slip easily into the listener's ears and go straight to the blood. The artist's sophomore effort, THE STORY, released in 2007, represents a significant maturation over her already excellent 2005 self-titled debut.
Produced by the legendary T-Bone Burnett, THE STORY has an urgent, stripped-down feel that nevertheless gleams with lush, lovely atmosphere. Backed by a full band, Carlile's sound is muscular yet intimate, falling somewhere between country, rock, and folk. It's a satisfying listen any way you slice it, one that will appeal especially to fans of the alt country and new folk movements.
Personnel: Brandi Carlile (guitar); Josh Neumann (cello); David Palmer , Keefus Ciancia (keyboards); Matt Chamberlain (drums); Tim Hanseroth, Phil Hanseroth (background vocals).
Additional personnel: Emily Saliers, Amy Ray (vocals).
Entertainment Weekly (p.74) - "[T]his 25-year-old has an old soul's gift for songwriting that addresses how time subtly changes love and friendship." -- Grade: B+ Mojo (Publisher) (p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "A fetching tune, an acoustic guitar, a drop of regret for love entangled....Brandi Carlile gives you something from her inner core." The Story album
$11.99 Initial pressings of OUR ENDLESS NUMBERED DAYS comes with a 4-song bonus CD.
While Sam Beam's self-recorded first outing as Iron & Wine, THE CREEK DRANK THE CRADLE, features a hushed bedroom atmosphere, his second full-length album, OUR ENDLESS NUMBERED DAYS, invites listeners into a slightly larger living room. Here there's enough space for an outside producer (Brian Deck) and additional musicians (including Sam's sister Sara on harmony vocals). Though Beam's musical palette has broadened ...
| | Animals Retrospective CD (2004)
The Story CD music
$15.09 Today the most recognition the Animals get is "House of the Rising Sun" being played on oldies radio, but in the mid-1960s they were a powerful part of the British Invasion, often reckoned on a par with the Beatles, the Stones, and the Who. Like those bands, the Animals had strong roots in blues and R&B, but, in their original incarnation, they stayed closer to those roots than their peers did. This definitive compilation, masterfully assembled by the ABKCO think tank of Teri Landi and Jody Klein, shows the tough, uncompromising use to which the Animals put their American influences. John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" is recast as a raw garage rocker glazed with Alan Price's sinister organ riffs, and the aforementioned "House of the Rising Sun" is transformed from a traditional folk lament to an urgent, ominous piece of churning tumult.
Of course, the group skillfully expanded those roots (with the help of some great writers), ...

$15.09 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter ...

The Story songs
$10.49 In March 2005, Neil Young was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. Four days before he was scheduled for a lifesaving operation, he headed to Nashville, where he wrote and recorded the country folk album PRAIRIE WIND with old friends and family members. After the successful operation and recovery period, he returned to Nashville that August to play at the famed Ryman Auditorium, once again gathering together friends and family for this special performance. He also brought along Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme, who in addition to making such hits as THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and PHILADELPHIA has made such successful concert films as STOP MAKING SENSE (with the Talking Heads) and ...

| | Alice Cooper School's Out CD (1972) Gold
The Story CD music
$20.29 Although it still contained elements of their two preceding albums' heavy metal garage rock, Alice Cooper's 1972 release SCHOOL'S OUT expanded on the more progressive material of '71s KILLER (i.e., its title track and "Halo of Flies"). The majority of the songs were more sophisticated than the group's past work, with greater use of dynamics. The band was working under tight a deadline to ...
| | Queen The Works CD (1984)
The Story music CDs
$11.89 With their previous album (HOT SPACE) confusing many of their fans, Queen had something to prove on THE WORKS. The band definitely succeeded at getting back on track--THE WORKS was one of the best rock releases of 1984, featuring the worldwide smash "Radio GaGa" and reintroducing their fans to Queen's classic sound. THE WORKS spawned a total of four U.K. top ten singles, confirming that Queen had returned from their short hiatus in fine form.
Almost all of the elements you've come to expect from a classic Queen release are present on here. "I Want To Break Free" and "It's A Hard Life" are instantly addictive pop-rock. "Tear It Up" is a straight-ahead rocker and "Machines (Back To Humans)" is a successful electronic rock experiment. And as on the majority of latter-day Queen albums, there are a few politically charged tunes. "Hammer To Fall," became an instant concert favorite with it's merger of melodic hard rock and a sing-a-long chorus, but the lyrics deal with the impending danger of nuclear build-up. The other, "Is This The World We Created?," consists of just vocals with acoustic guitar accompaniment, and closes the otherwise upbeat album on a somber note.
Following the disappointing commercial performance of the dance-oriented Hot Space in 1982, Queen took 1983 off to get refocused and work on a follow-up that would put the band back on track. While the songwriting had definitely improved on the resulting The Works in 1984, the album sonically lacked the punch of such earlier releases as News of the World and The Game (strangely, Hot Space even had a better overall sound). Although the album only peaked at number 23 on the U.S. album charts, it was a Top Ten hit in just about every other area of the world, producing the huge single "Radio Ga Ga." Three other tracks were hits in Queen's native England -- the uplifting "I Want to Break Free," the love song "It's a Hard Life," and the politically conscious rocker "Hammer to Fall," which dealt with the danger of nuclear weapons. Other highlights ...
