Also bulldozed are the complex material and junction systems, replaced by a new point-based spellcasting system and an item-based ability learning system. Four party members can enter into combat together, and each of the eight characters is unique -- only summoners can use call spells, only black mages can cast black magic, and so on (as in the older Final Fantasy games). Renowned artist Yoshitaka Amano returns to the series as character designer after a two-game absence, and longtime series veteran Nobuo Uematsu underscores the action with suitably magnificent music.
