| | Willie Colon La Gran Fuga CD Willie Colon Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Already one of the most feared young talents on the salsa scene, Willie Colón and his partner in crime Héctor Lavoe showcased not only confidence but a surprising flexibility and independence on 1970s La Gran Fuga (The Big Break). Case in point was the first song, "Ghana'e," based on an African children's song and given a vocal reading (by both Lavoe and the band chorus) that invoked a sense of joy and wonder quite at odds with the cutthroat world of New York salsa. Throughout the album, Colón's septet was tight as usual (they had freed themselves completely from their Latin soul and novelty past) but they performed songs at many different paces and left plenty of space in their sound -- yet still never sacrificed the power of Colón and Willie Campbell's dual-trombone lineup. The son montuno "Pa' Colombia" or the powerful "Barrunto" were the clearest hits to those who were already Colón fans, but the rest of the material stretched Colón's résumé, including the melancholy "No Cambiaré," an affectionate look at the power of grandmothers (and mothers) in "Abuelita," and salutes to Puerto Rico, Colombia, Brazil, and Mexico as well as the Estados Unidos. ~ John Bush
Personnel: Willie Colón (trombone); Héctor Lavoe (vocals); Willie Campbell (trombone); Prof. Joe Torres (piano); Santiago Ortega Gonzalez (bass guitar); Milton Cardona (conga drum); Jose Mangual (bongos); Louie "Timbalito" Romero (timbales).

Inconsistent in comparison to its illustrious predecessor, his encore Alligator offering still contains some goodies. Chief among them are the infectious originals "Eyeballin'" and "Don't Go to Sleep on Me," along with a delicious revival of Bobby "Blue" Bland's "I'll Take Care of You." ~ Bill Dahl

| | Olga Tanon Mujer De Fuego CD (1993)
La Gran Fuga
$8.09 On her second album, Mujer de Fuego, released in 1993, Olga Tañón enters the stride that would carry her to exceptional popularity among tropical music listeners, peaking the following year with her superlative Siente el Amor... album. Mujer de Fuego is a leap forward from her debut, Sola. Like that album, this one is comprised of straightforward tropical music, merengue in particular. There's absolutely none of the pop tendencies and over-produced ballads that would often weigh down her music at the end of the decade. Instead, this is intense and fast-paced dance music, putting the focus directly on Tañón and the rhythm, not on the production or studiocraft. Mujer de Fuego kicks off with a pair of highlights, "Contigo o sin Ti" and "Muchacho Malo," both of which were significant chart hits, Tañón's first. Yaidelice Monrrozeau, who wrote the former, also pens the title track; Raldy Vázquez, who wrote the latter, contributes two additional songs. This reliance on particular songwriters would continue with subsequent albums, as Tañón would often perform ...

| | Cold Blow These Winter Winds CD (2004)
La Gran Fuga
$13.59 Finally, a Christmas album for folk fans who hate Christmas albums. Recorded live in Edinburgh in December 2003, at a charity concert, this brings together the cream of the young Scotland-based folk crop on a mix of traditional and contemporary material. Starting out with a selection of tunes on piano and whistle, then a luminous version of the traditional "Lullay Lullay," the fun really begins with a cover of "Fairytale of New York," which also incorporates a pair of tunes. It might be quite the usual Christmas spirit, but it remains a fabulous song. There are few frills to the arrangements; instead they let the songs and tunes speak for themselves, as on "Bulalow," which works perfectly with just voice, bass, and whistle, and in fact gains more impact from its sparseness. Inevitably, it's the better-known material that hits home, likes a lovely, soaring version of "Little Drummer Boy" that dispenses ...
