Coming a full decade after her debut, Charlotte Gainsbourg's second album is a significant departure from her early work, which was directly influenced by her late father, Serge Gainsbourg. On 5:55, Gainsbourg has taken the interesting tack of collaborating not with people who had worked with her father, the most divisive and influential figure in the history of French pop music, but with musicians of her own generation who have previously acknowledged his influence.
Jarvis Cocker, formerly of Britpop mainstays Pulp, Neil Hannon of Irish chamber pop orchestra The Divine Comedy, and the French duo Air have all previously recorded songs indebted to Serge Gainsbourg, but that influence is tempered here by deference to Charlotte's own gifts. Her sultry vocals remain at the fore of all of these songs, supported by the musicians' subtle, soundtrack-like settings. Highlights include the title track and the erotic "Beauty Mark."Magnet (p.98) - "Gainsbourg is a whispery, transparent presence.....She suits the pre-dawn mood alluded to in 5:55's title, a waking dream state where illusions seem real." CMJ (p.4) - "The album is soothing, moody and brimming with Nigel Godrich's funky lounge production..." Charlotte Gainsbourg 5:55 Songs 5:55 Review

5:55 album
$23.75 KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD contains 10 bonus tracks and represents everything the band recorded through early 1986, including all of the LOST EP, and the I LOVE MY LEATHER JACKET/THE GREAT ESCAPE 12"
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD, The Chills' 18-track compilation culled from The Chills early and mid-'80s EPs and singles, is highlighted by the song "Pink Frost."
The Chills' Martin Phillipps mixes up melodic pop with elements of garage rock and punk, creating songs with a sweet melancholy all their own. Phillipps has always been the focus of the Chills, writing and singing the band's songs. His group has also rivaled Menudo in its sheer number of personnel changes. In a just world, the Chills would have sold just as many ...

| | Killing Floor CD (1995) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
5:55 songs
$16.65 The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. All of these tunes, with the exception of one, are revamped versions of songs from the blues canon with different words. The lone "cover" in the set was written by Willie Dixon titled "Woman You Need Love," the tune Zep ripped for "Whole Lotta Love." Despite the fact that this set was issued before by Repertoire, the Akarma version is definitive in that it features the original cover artwork in ...
| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
5:55 album
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance ...

5:55 album
$15.05 The Redwood thinkers were formed in the summer of 2004 and their debut self titled album is a glimpse into the hearts and minds of three very talented singer songwriters. Singing and playing comes naturally to each and every one of them with a passion second to none. Music that gently cuts across eras & styles, tied together by powerful song writing & the sheer potential beauty of the English language."The band’s debut album, ' The Redwood Thinkers', is a varied group of songs, each one the baby of an individual band member lovingly brought up by all three. Particular highlights include the Kezia vocal on Lunatic In A Dressing Gown, which puts one in mind of Lisa Loeb, and Darren’s intense Open Your Eyes... a first album to be proud of" Chris Wrught - The Chris Wright Radio Show“ Hello to lilting lovelies Redwood Thinkers playing acoustic islands of calm and plaintive thoughts in rich tones. Smoothly-textured, ringing chords ebb and flow from their guitars, the singer's candlelight voice casting a comforting glow of softly smoking incense across the room. A little too mellow for sure, but with unexpected turns of slightly bitter, slightly resentful complaints nudging their way in as they question "What if I forgot your birthday, what if I forgot your name?" Dealing in personal, personable and down-to-earth everyman's storytelling, Redwood Thinkers daub a wash of homely yellow ochre over everything and invite you to consider everyday realities with an accepting eye…” Lauren Strain - Leeds music Scene"Imagine if you will, you're at a party and the guitars come out. As usual it's time to bite your tongue, try and close your ears and just ...
