The serene opening instrumental simply titled "Prelude" may not give any clue that thudding drum machines will dominate soon. Instead, it paints a perfect, widescreen picture of how huge and ambitious VNV Nation's seventh effort Judgement is, while also warning that this album is not afraid to be soft. Fans of the gritty and gutsy early days may think this another sub-Depeche Mode effort, and there is no hint VNV has any desire to chase them. Adjust your expectations accordingly and the up-tempo numbers -- most stretching past the five-minute mark -- do not disappoint. Strong tracks like "Testament" and "Descent" flex their muscles with ominous power and melodies that are instant and probably a bit too friendly for the Ministry set or anyone looking for the industrial blasts found on VNV's debut, Empires. Of course, heartfelt tracks like the lazy and drifty "Illusion" would be impossible on their early albums. Here, they're the ones that make the whole package so well rounded when dropped between the band's tried and true darkwave club music. The lyrics are free of metaphor for the most part and uncomplicated, maybe to a fault. Still, they get their distraught and disappointed message across and sit on intricate, layered arrangements of synths, sequencers, and drum machines. VNV still work just fine in dark clubs, but with bold personal moments and grand soundscapes, Judgement works even better at home when given full attention. ~ David Jeffries

Judgement Music Review

Customer Judgement Reviews

Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) 4 stars

3 stars Depthless
When the prelude promises more than the album can deliver, there's a problem. With no truly outstanding tracks, Judgement reeks of mediocrity. The music is generally bland and the lyrics are too straightforward and sissy. Fans of the mellow, more poppy side of VNV will most likely put this CD on par with Matter + Form, or perhaps even a step lower. The harder-hitting tracks on this CD don't measure to up any of VNV's previous work. Likewise, the slower end (which the album is mostly comprised of) lacks the depth and emotion of what I believed to be standard of VNV Nation. On a more positive note, 'Prelude' is a simple yet eloquent production masterpiece. 'Descent' contains some seriously meaningful lyrics, and 'Nemesis' is very Honour-esque in terms of intensity. All in all, I'd only recommend it to the hardcore VNV fans and anyone who was into Matter + Form. As a long-time fan, I personally wasn't moved by Judgement. Three stars.

5 stars back and forth
first let me say i'v met ronan and mark and they are both awesome guys! that being said. i picked up the new disk at the show in chicago last week got it signed! poped it in the player as soon as we got back to the car. and was delighted some of the disk is slow and some of it is fast. some of it is happy and some of it is very dark (in wich ronan sounds amazingly sexy) while not all of the songs are all thumpy. they are all amazing in their owne right! some poeple have said that illusion is a whiny talk the jumper out of jumping kinda song (and yeah it kinda is) i personaly find the song nice to listen to when life sucks.. some of us are depressed for real life issues. and words like "I know it's hard to tell how mixed up you feel Hoping what you need is behind every door Each time you get hurt, I don't want you to change Because everyone has hopes, you're human after all The feeling sometimes, wishing you were someone else Feeling as though you never belong This feeling is not sadness, this feeling is not joy I truly understand, Please, don't cry now " are amazing! and then there is decent! the oposing side of the disk the darker side you could say with words like "Manmade prophecies serve to vindicate All sides who claim themselves worthy servants obedient to the same God A God who commands them not to kill These faithful in lines that number thousands bring perdition throughout the land As though the angel of deah himself had been unleashed to exact a punishment upon this world Across this cursed place rage the fires Where the innocent are burned on a thousand funeral pyres In anguish parted from this world" dark and sexy with an amazing beat! no it's not future perfect however would you really want to hear the same thing over and over again? if you are a vnv fan GET THIS DISK! and please go see them live! the energy at their shows is astounding!

4 stars Another great vnv nation album.
Not my absolute favourite, but none the less amazing. Ronan really gets deep into your emotions with this one. fairly dark but it has a great pulse all album long, a really great breath of frsh air from the rest of the bland industry.

3 stars JUDGEMENT ???
Judged by this new cd alone i wouldn't buy any future releases. Ronan needs to work on "REDEMPTION" to show all that he is capable of. He has pure genius as has demonstrated this especially on FUTUREPERFECT and EMPIRES. This cd isn't much better than MATTER AND FORM.

R.E.M.'s final album for IRS Records, 1987's DOCUMENT was the Georgia quartet's commercial breakthrough. The initial single, the spookily obsessive "The One I Love," was an unexpected Top 10 hit, and its follow-up, the "Subterranean Homesick Blues"-style rant "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)," became one of R.E.M.'s most renowned songs. The first R.E.M. album produced by Scott Litt (soon to be a frequent collaborator) DOCUMENT skillfully blends the commercial gloss of LIFE'S RICH PAGEANT and the mysterioso murk of FABLES OF THE RECONSTRUCTION, combining the best elements of both for what would soon become R.E.M.'s signature sound. (Note the thumping rhythm section on the opening "Finest Worksong" and the oddly buoyant melody of "Exhuming McCarthy.") The band even manages to salute one of its favorite predecessors by romping through a loose, fun cover of Wire's "Strange." R.E.M. began to move toward mainstream record production on Lifes Rich Pageant, but they didn't have a commercial breakthrough until the following year's Document. Ironically, Document is a stranger, more varied album than its predecessor, but co-producer Scott Litt -- who would go on to produce every R.E.M. album in the following decade -- is a better conduit for the band than Don Gehman, giving the group a clean sound without sacrificing their enigmatic tendencies. "Finest Worksong," the stream-of-conscious rant "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)," and the surprise Top Ten single "The One I Love" all crackle with muscular rhythms and guitar riffs, but the real surprise is how political the mid-tempo jangle pop of "Welcome to the Occupation," "Disturbance at the Heron House," and "King of Birds" is. Where Lifes Rich Pageant ...

Ignore the fact that the opening title track sounds almost exactly like the intro to Neil Young's "Ohio" and Patto's second album kicks into gear from the moment needle strikes vinyl. A driving fiesta of good-time bluesy-rock, Hold Your Fire retains just enough of its predecessor's jazz fusion sensibilities to ensure that you're never sure what will happen next, but similarly imbibes sufficient oxygen from elsewhere on the early-'70s British rock underground to line up alongside any other primal gem of the age. Certainly producer Muff Winwood seems considerably more at ease than he did his last time around, hauling Ollie Halsall's tuneful soloing high up in the mix and framing the album's best tracks -- the melancholy "You, You Point Your Finger" among them -- within some breathtakingly lovely arrangements. Another highlight, the funky Faces-like "See You at the Dance Tonight," almost single-handedly blueprints the best of the still-unborn pub rock boom, while Halsall's playful "Air Raid Shelter" would not have been out of place on Hold Your Fire, which ...
