Austin indie rock collective Shearwater originally self-released their debut album, PALO SANTO, in 2006. When they signed to Matador Records, the group took the opportunity to almost entirely re-record the album, and added on a bonus disc of eight brand-new songs for good measure. This revamped version of PALO SANTO is an outstanding slice of progressive indie rock very much in the mold of the Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse. Highlights include the epic "Red Sea, Black Sea" and the haunting climax, "Hail Mary."
Additional Tracks
Shearwater: Kim Burke, Will Sheff, Howard Draper, Jonathan Meiburg, Thor Harris (banjo).
Additional personnel: Craig Ross (guitar); Travis Weller (violin); Scott Brackett (trumpet).
Magnet (p.07/01/2006) - "[A]light with baroque dream pop....[With] sonic worldview, one in which words and musical notes are chosen for the way they feel rubbing up against one another." Mojo (Publisher) (p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Expected delicate, ethereal folk-baroque is joined by songs of dark intensity." Shearwater Palo Santo Songs Palo Santo Review

Palo Santo album
$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.
Okerere's urgent yelp most often recalls a fired-up incarnation of the Cure's Robert Smith, but the sounds the group creates echo everything from Gang of Four's staccato militarism ("Banquet") to the reverberating guitars of the Chameleons ("Price of Gas"). At times, Bloc Party also recalls the ecstatic soundwashes of early-1990s cult pioneers like Ride ("Plans") and Slowdive ("Compliments"). Lyrically, Okerere tilts toward an endearing adolescent pessimism ...

Palo Santo music CDs
$15.35 1995's TORN AGAIN is the album that most definitively bridges the gap between Peter Case's power-pop days as a key member of the Nerves and the Plimsouls, and his folkier solo work. Though there's nothing as poppy as "A Million Miles Away" or "Hanging on the Telephone" here, ...
| | Charles Mingus New Tijuana Moods CD (1962)
Palo Santo songs
$18.65 TIJUANA MOODS features 12-tracks by legendary jazz bassist Charles Mingus, including "Dizzy Moods," "Los Mariachis," and "Flamingo."
Charles Mingus has been quoted as saying that this is the best album he ever made, and that's recommendation enough. The second song alone, "Ysabel's Table Dance," is a brilliant blending of Latin rhythms and Mingus jazz that even the most casual listener will find entrancing--10-plus minutes of castanet-frenzied joy make one yearn to see what Mingus and his running buddies encountered in Mexico. (The bassist wrote that he took the trip to Tijuana "minus a wife" specifically to lose himself, and instead found music and sights to inspire a masterpiece.) "Los Mariachis (The Street Musicians)" manages to evoke both intimate moments with its unaccompanied solos and the enforced fun and bounce that street musicians must employ to earn their bread. "Dizzy Moods" doffs a cap to Dizzy Gillespie's own forays into Latin music, and the riff of "Tijuana Gift Shop" sets up a galloping tune that suggests the excitement a tourist feels in any authentic, potently exotic locale.

| | Mantronix Album CD (1985) (Import)
Palo Santo CD music
$11.79 Curtis "Mantronik" Khaleel was often quoted as saying that his mission was to "take rap a step beyond the streets," and the innovative producer/mixmaster accomplished that goal on Mantronix's debut album, Mantronix: The Album. This excellent 1985 LP was way ahead of its time; while the rapping of Mantronix's partner MC Tee is pure mid-'80s New York hip-hop, the production is anything but conventional. On gems like "Needle to the Groove," "Bassline," and the hit "Fresh Is the Word," you can hear the parallels between Tee's rhyming and the East Coast b-boy rhymes that Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, and the Fat Boys were providing in 1985. But the album's high-tech, futuristic production sets it apart from other New York hip-hop of the mid-'80s, and even though one of the LP's tracks is titled "Hardcore Hip-Hop," Mantronix had a hard time appealing to hip-hop's hardcore. Mantronix: The Album actually fared better in dance music, electro-funk, and club circles than it did among hardcore b-boys. But this is definitely a hip-hop record, and it is also Mantronix's most essential release. ~ Alex Henderson
Formed by now legendary New York producer Kurtis Mantronik and MC Tee, Mantronix are still known as one of the best and most innovative groups from hip-hops golden age. Mantronix were probably the first group to popularise samples as pop hooks, although their music actually crossed the boundaries of hardcore rap, electro, techno and house, their music has inspired artists around the world. Their first single; Fresh Is The Word, hit the streets of New York in 1985 courtesy of Sleeping Bag Records. The track had the streets and clubs of New York pumping with its raw beats and East Coast rapping that draws comparisons ...
| | True Margrit Seaworthy CD (2005)
Palo Santo music CDs
$12.85 True Margrit's signature piano-pop is whip smart, expertly crafted, and has more hooks than a pirate ship. On SEAWORTHY, the trio's 4th and most ambitious album to date, True Margrit navigates the waters of interpersonal politics, vanity, history, time-travel, and mortality, and arrives wth a group of songs that is both emotionally raw and musically evolved.True Margrit's sound is fueled by singer/ songwriter/piano-player Margrit Eichler's husky-sweet alto, her adventuresome piano, and a secret weapon: the muscular, dynamic, turn-on-a-dime rhythm-section of Gary Hobish on bass and Andrew Bacon on drums.SEAWORTHY is fleshed out with touches of guitar, cello, oboe, bassoon, sax, and flute by an array of Bay Area guest stars including Pam Delgado and Jeri Jones (of Blame Sally), Amy Meyers, Kat Downs, Carrie Adler, Ned Howey, and Symon Michael.Although reminiscent of Ben Folds, Fiona Apple, Elvis Costello, and Aimee Mann, True Margrit's sound is all their own--a lyrical admixture of science, history, and personal narrative that explores the tension between what is catchy and what is complex.Based in San Francisco, True Margrit has probably played near you (or will be playing at some point soon) in a solo or band jaunt from NYC to Seattle to Los Angeles or beyond in nightclubs, cafes, theatres, radio & television stations, or sailboats.Go to www.truemargrit.com to find out more about shows, the True Margrit ...
| | Dogmixer Coasting E.P CD (2005)
Palo Santo songs
$6.69 dogmixer - coasting E.PCoasting is the first E.P from the illustrious and eclectic work of dogmixer: an upbeat blend of atmospheric electro, an intriguing mixture of live instrumentation and trademark electronica. Coasting sets the standard; it conveys the belief and think of a cutting edge dance artist. Coasting has recently had airplay on BBC Radio 1's Rob da Bank Show, plus plays on EI Radio and Freakin Radio. It would be fair to say that Matt Watts aka "dogmixer" is more to the eye than just another London Electro laptop (Geek) artist.......the dogmixer's busy music reflects matt's complicated brain. The dogmixer, is something quite amusing: Matt, a pretty spaced out veggie animal loving hippy, a country boy beer drinker, recovering hedonist, uhmmmmmmmmmm, a bit absent minded..... Space cadet..... People think he's from a boy band (the ...
