Al Pacino stars in this film directed by Sidney Lumet. Extras include Audio Commentary: by Director Sidney Lumet, Theatrical Trailer, Documentaries: The Making of Dog Day Afternoon, New hour-long documentary with Al Pacino: The Story, Casting the Controversy, Recreating the Facts, After the Filming, and Featurette: Lumet: Film Maker (new featurette). Al Pacino plays a ferocious and fed-up bank robber in Lumet's classic film DOG DAY AFTERNOON. Balancing suspense, violence, and humor, the film's depiction of a grand-scale media event craftily dives from the political to the personal, evoking a piercing portrait of a man and his devastating downward tumble as seen through the media circus that Lumet made a career of chronicling. Pacino is heartbreakingly real as Sonny, a smart yet self-destructive Brooklyn tough whose plan to rob the local bank to fund his male lover's (Chris Sarandon) sex change goes absurdly wrong. Accompanied only by his doltish accomplice, Sal (John Cazale), Sonny realizes that all the money had been removed before his arrival, and decides to kidnap a handful of bank employees instead. As the lengthy August day drags on, Sonny and hordes of local police, led by Sergeant Moretti (Charles Durning), make little progress, and eventually Sonny's wife and lover are brought to the scene. The crowd's sympathy is immediately captured by the charismatic Sonny, whose antagonism with the police is played out before an audience of millions, leading to an inevitably tragic finish. Theatrical release: September 21, 1975.
Filmed on location in New York City.
In real life, Pacino's character, Sonny Wortzik, was serving a 20-year federal prison sentence while the film was being made. Dog Day Afternoon Quotes/Excerpts: "He wants to know when you'll be through."--Jenny (Carol Kane), repeating to Sonny (Al Pacino) what her husband is asking her on the phone as he's robbing the bank
"No, I don't want to be paid, I don't need to be paid. Look, I'm here with my partner and nine other people, see. And we're dying, man. You know? You're going to see our brains on the sidewalk, they're going to spill our guts out. Now, are you going to show that on television? Have all your housewives look at that? Instead of AS THE WORLD TURNS? I mean, what do you got for me? I want something for that."--Sonny
"Attica! Attica!"--Sonny to the crowds outside the bank Dog Day Afternoon Reviews: 4 stars out of 5 -- "Pacino gives one of the performances of his career....Lumet's gritty 1970s landmark remains one of the first mainstream Hollywood films to deal with gay and transsexual characters in a relatively unsensational manner..."
-- Stephen Dalton, Uncut "DOG DAY AFTERNOON swarms with energy, excitement and drama."
-- Danny Richelieu, Widescreen Review "The combination of simmering tension, comedy and pathos is adroitly handled by the director and his excellent cast."

Dog Day Afternoon Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) On the way to a stellar career! The plot, the setting, the director, the extras, all helped make this a fantastic movie. Al Pacino is absolutely riveting, the cast worked so well together. Watching Al Pacino slide up and down the bank was a great touch! And John Cazale, I feel sadness every time I see him, he unfortunatly died in 1978 of bone cancer. I have been a fan of Pacino from this movie up to present day. He has never disappointed me, never in my opinion given a bad performance.

17-year old girl loves dog day afternoon I saw this amazing film a few years ago and cemented my present obsession with Al Pacino, this was only the 2nd pacino film I've seen, and I fell in love, having no idea how wide Al's range was and how different the role was to Michael corleone only a year before. The dialogue is fantastic, great performances, and gorgeous cinematography. ANy big movie or al pacino fan like me will really enjoy this film Submitted by titanfan207 (Englewood, FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful. One of Pacino's best This has to be one of Pacino's best movies. The entire cast is impressive and it has some very tight moments. Submitted by Blake (Brandon,MS) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

GRIPPING CRIME DRAMA Plot: An inept bank robber and his dimwitted buddy hold up a Brooklyn bank and everything
goes down hill from there.
Review: Al (Sonny) pacino is in fine form in this movie as is the rest of the cast. Filled
with memorable quotes bad language and black humor. This fine paced film is a trip
to 70s attitudes before political correctness you won't soon forget. Submitted by a reviewer (SOMERVILLE NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

$30.49 British director Christopher Nolan's (BATMAN BEGINS) eclectic resume gains another interesting entry with THE PRESTIGE. The basic plot, which concerns the rivalry between two magicians in early 20th-century London, closely resembles a fellow 2006 movie--Edward Norton's THE ILLUSIONIST--and the two films are sure to be closely compared. In Nolan's film, Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale bring the characters of Robert Angier and Alfred Bordon to life. Robert and Alfred were young magician apprentices together, but became bitter rivals as their careers began to shape their adult lives and a terrible accident claimed the life of Robert's wife. In the subsequent years Robert has become wildly jealous of Alfred's superior talents, so in a last ditch attempt to steal some artistic ground he sends his ...
