Interesting depiction of relations with the Indians in the frontier West focuses on the relationship between cavalry scout Stewart and Apache chief Cochise (Chandler). The scout's attempts to head off an Indian war are complicated by his love affair with an Indian woman. Color by Technicolor.
Additional cast: Joyce MacKenzie (Terry), Raymond Bramley (Colonel Bernall), Jack Lee (Boucher), and Argentina Brunetti. Broken Arrow Reviews: "Among the first in the genre to treat Indians sympathetically and authentically, it then pulls its final punch."

Broken Arrow Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) one of best made i had been looking for this particular movie for over 5 years/thank you for letting me see it again Submitted by RPIA1 (NYC,NY USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Breaking Barriers The message is an excellent message of reconciliation between races. While there are people of every race who do bad things, there are also people who want to treat others with respect. Jimmy Stewart plays such a man, as does Jeff Chandler.
What keeps me from giving it a 5 star rating is that they used a caucasion actor (Jeff Chandler) to play the main Native American role of Cochese. However, they did use some Native Americans in the cast.
For anyone who likes Westerns, this is top-notch. Submitted by a reviewer (Minneapolis, MN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful. This review is for a different format.

| | Drums Along The Mohawk DVD (1939)
Broken Arrow movie DVD
$9.69 DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK is John Ford's first film in Technicolor (which recently perfected far richer shadings of color than had previously been possible), and the director uses it to stunning effect. The film stars Henry Fonda as Revolutionary War-era farmer Gilbert Martin, who, in 1776, has returned with his well-born wife, Lana (Claudette Colbert), to his rustic cabin in the increasingly dangerous Mohawk River valley. At first unaccustomed to the harsh physical challenges of frontier life, Lana adjusts to the work at hand and is soon able to help her husband in the fields. Shortly after they learn that the colonies are at war with the British, their farmhouse is attacked and burned to the ground by a party of Tory-led Indians. The feisty Widow McKlennar (Edna May Oliver) provides temporary shelter for the couple, but it's only a matter of time before the Indians launch a more brutal assault. Save for THE QUIET MAN, DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK contains the richest passages of pastoral imagery in Ford's entire canon, the visual beauty nearly upstaging the spectacular and terrifying Indian battles. The performances, particularly ...
