Life... what an intricately paradoxical concept. Simplicity at its best yet with so many complexities that it blows your mind. For those of you like myself, whose mind is like a little hamster on a wheel that never stops spinning, there exists an endless amount of questioning and contemplating on how to actually live life and why that way. In the midst of questioning I then become confused and frustrated all the while setting myself up for more disappointment because of all the unanswered questions. Yet, out of nowhere come those moments of life that, for lack of better phraseology, simply take your breath away. Those simplistic joys of life that are beyond description. They come randomly and in the simple form of a conversation with a friend, a smile from a stranger, or the setting of the sun. It is in these brief moments that everything does make sense and you are at peace. It is because of these dueling tides in life that I must agree with C.S. Lewis when he says, "I have found a desire in myself that no experience in this world can satisfy; the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world." It is that belief in another world that brings into my life the paradox of peace and frustration and that is what my music is all about. That is what I am all about. How am I to live a paradox? I have many questions and a few answers, but mostly just a desire to change. A desire to live. A desire to be who I am designed to be; whatever that might look like. live.love.learn. Q. Is this really a live album?A. Yes. It was recorded at the Detroit Rescue Mission on Sunday night March 11, 2007. Our home church, Lake Pointe Bible Church in Plymouth, MI (lakepointebible.org) takes a group down every six months or so to handle the Sunday night worship for the Recovery Program. We were first involved in this back in October 2005, and these events are always a high point for us as we see God restoring His children and continuing to fulfill Isaiah 61.Q. But I don’t hear a crowd? Well, I do on a song or two, but not the whole thing. What’s up with that?A. Ah, very perceptive. That’s because we neglected to mic the crowd. Oops. But our singing microphones did pick up enough of the crowd that we left it in for certain songs. We didn’t really want to include applause after each and every song, because then it might seem like the event was about us performing for the praise of men and women, and that is NOT what was going on down there. It was truly a time of worship and challenging people to trust God with everything. But there were a few times (like “On My Side” and “Old Man Blues”) where the people were especially involved and it made sense to boost the volume for those special moments.Q. Well, why bother to put out this album? Except for three songs, you or other people have already recorded these songs.A. Oh, so you know a lot about music, do you? Then you’ll of course realize that we only included cover songs where we felt we were able to make a significant contribution to the arrangement. We also included a few older songs off our CDs Shine and Signs & Wonders because we wanted to introduce how we sound with our newest member, Andy Dempster (a.k.a. “A-Bomb”) and all that he brings to the band (someday we may even end up naming the band after him). Honestly, we didn’t expect to release this CD at all, we had just hoped to record the three new songs for use in our still-in-the-works CD called "Look Out"; however, God had a different idea and made it obvious to us by how well the recordings came out for not just those three new songs, but for the whole event. We did have to cut six other songs from the list, but they weren’t as good as these. Q. I get it. Can you tell me more about the three new songs that you included on this CD?A. Sure. The title cut, “Mission”, was intended to be the opening song for a CD that is still in the works called Look Out. It may still end up in that slot, because it’s a powerful opener (though we didn’t really open with it at the rescue mission…we opened with “People Get Ready”). The song has been around since 1990 (and if we used a big Van Halen-style synthesizer, it would sound more like it). It outlines many facets of the mission that we Christians have…and IT ROCKS.Q.
