| | Kinobe Soul Language CD Kinobe Discography of CDs
Kinobe is a singer/songwriter, instrument maker, and multi-instrumentalist; he plays guitar, kora (West African harp), adungu (Ugandan harp), kalimba, endongo (bowed lyre), endingidi (tube fiddle) and endere (flute) from Bugerere, Uganda. An early virtuoso on many stringed instruments, he has toured Africa and Europe in various bands since he was a teenager. He's studied kora with Mali's Toumani Diabaté and played with Youssou N'Dour and Salif Keita. On this set, his first international release, the sound is acoustic and stripped down, showcasing Kinobe's understated vocals and instrumental prowess. The ambient sounds of the jungle night open "Kamungolo" a lilting melody that tells of a wandering old man nicknamed Kamungolo, who is sustained by the handouts of more fortunate villagers. It's a strong tune driven by subtle percussion, pulsing kora and thumb piano, and a refrain that imprints itself into your mind after a single listen. "Mubaleete" ("Bring Them") is a beautiful, flowing kora lullaby, while "Mwana Wange" is a forte of African blues guitar with a hint of Mali in its structure, decrying the hardships many children face in hard times. "Tutambula" ("We Are Walking) is a jittery instrumental featuring what sounds like a balafon. It paints a pastoral portrait of herdsmen walking long distances through the plains looking for a place to feed their cattle. "Empewo" ("Wind") features Kinobe's delicate harp work and Michael Ouma's bluesy guitar, which adds mournful bent notes and sitar-like runs to the composition. The album is low-key and contemplative, even on up-tempo numbers like "Lucejjera," a tune about a plague of locusts that features the jazzy popping bass work of Allan Okia. Kinobe's Soul Language is a unassuming album, one that slowly wins you over with its restrained grooves and effortless virtuosity. ~ j. poet

$13.49 Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement that's been her hallmark. The style is a mix of influences that blend perfectly -- listen carefully ...

If you want to go straight to the source and hear real Cajun music without any hint of crossover, look to the Balfa Brothers. Though they were a popular live attraction as early as 1948, Dewey, Will, Burke, Harry, and Rodney (with assistance from family friend Hadley Fontenot on accordion) didn't record their first LP until 1965. Their second followed a full nine years later. Both are included on this seminal Cajun disc, and the purity of the group's performances is stunning.

| | Bob Marley Live!: Live At The Lyceum CD (1975) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Soul Language
$11.05 Additional personnel includes: Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, Marcia Griffiths (background vocals).
Nobody who likes music could fail to be emotionally moved by this album, and not just because Marley is no longer with us. It was a special live treat before he died. The great thing about this record is the feeling that this is what it was like every night, unlike other live recordings which capture one or two gigs of a tour. Marley was extra special and a giant of popular music. Wallow in this vital record and listen to a man who had something to say and yet had fun while he said it. Most of the tracks you would want to be on the record are here, including the definitive version of 'No Woman No Cry' and a funky 'Lively Up Yourself'.
As the title implies, this is indeed Bob Marley & the Wailers captured in performance at the Lyceum Ballroom in London during the final U.K. leg of the Natty Dread tour. Passionate and symbiotic energies constantly cycle between the band and audience, the net result of which is one of the most memorable concert recordings of the pop music era. With the addition of lead guitarist Al Anderson during the recording ...

| | Coast To Coast CD (2004)
Soul Language
$15.39 Although it's filled with good intentions and a bevy of diverse guests from Herb Alpert to guitarist Derek Trucks, producer/composer/keyboardist Jason Miles' Maximum Grooves vehicle stays stuck in neutral. Apparently inspired by the slick N.Y.C. jazz of keyboardist Don Grolnick, Miles invites a gaggle of smooth jazz crossover stars to replicate the sound that initially stirred him in the late '70s/early '80s. While none of this all-instrumental album is unlistenable, the overall sound is soulless in its anonymous and nondescript jazz fusion. Miles' dependence on loops and synthesizers robs a sense of dynamics from the sound. Even when the soloists try to push outside the boundaries, they are gobbled up by the slick, dull production. Occasionally a funky groove like "Karma Kanic" (get it?) threatens to move the proceedings into more lively territory, but even on that track, the usually identifiable sax of Spyro Gyra's Jay Beckenstein and the crisp attack of drummer Steve Ferrone don't elevate the pedestrian mood. Destined to be background music to elegant dinners for two and subsequent romantic overtures, Coast to Coast never takes off. It also wastes an impressive lineup of talented yet ultimately faceless musicians. Not quite elevator music but dangerously close, maximum snooze is more like it. ~ Hal Horowitz
