On its second full-length outing, 2007's LOSE ALL TIME, the Vancouver, Canada-based ensemble You Say Party! We Say Die! makes up for an unfortunate band name with a sharp set of dance-punk tunes. Highlights of the edgy, rhythm-driven album include "Downtown Mayors Unite, Alley Kids Rule!"--a raucous number that sounds like a fusion of !!! and Yeah Yeah Yeahs; and the jagged yet melodic "Monster."
Providing more of the same as their debut album in the best possible sense, Lose All Time cements British Columbia's You Say Party! We Say Die! as one of the most consistently enjoyable acts of the neo-new wave, even despite their terrible name. With their combination of Becky Ninkovic's yowling, bratty lead vocals and Krista Loewen's unapologetically cheesy keyboards, the majority of Lose All Time passes by in a blur of thumping dance-rock tunes highly indebted to the twin towers of the Athens, GA, new wave set, Pylon and the B-52's. However, the haunting piano-and-voice ballad "You're Almost There" provides an effective breather amidst all the nervy dancefloor fillers, and the closing "Quiet World" has a hypnotic pulse akin to the best work of the often underrated Martha & the Muffins. A more consistent and thoughtful release than 2006's Hit the Floor!, which got over in part because of the band's infectious sense of fun and enthusiasm, Lose All Time is a genuinely terrific album showing that You Say Party! 45 or 46 Songs That Weren't Good Enough to Go on Our Other Records has to be one of the longest, and greatest, album titles of all time. However, for you pedants out there, it's also far from accurate. These songs may not have been up to NOFX album standards, but all, bar one, were considered worthy for release on 7" singles, EPs, or compilations. And that one exception is a new song. All told, this comes close to bringing together much of the group's vinyl-only releases and tough to find numbers from indie compilations. The Organ's 2002 debut EP Sinking Hearts was more captivating than most of that year's full-length releases: over the course of just 15 minutes, the band crafted chiaroscuro meditations on falling in and out of love that were just as light and jangly as they were dark and brooding.
