Initial pressings of Edge of the World, the debut release from Dragonfly, have all the markings of a vanity recording, albeit a gorgeously packaged one. But even if it is a vanity project, it's a very well-executed one. Frontman Miki Singh gamely projects a wide range of emotions, while his backing band of Boston-area studio veterans provides heartless, if eminently able, assistance. Dragonfly's MOR post-grunge rock music is not tied to an era or genre, which is both a help and a hindrance: these two discs will never sound dated, but they're trapped in an indistinct anonymity that will render them quickly forgotten. Edge of the World might have benefited from an editor's touch: 24 cuts are simply overkill for an indie debut, with too many of them functioning as little more than competent filler. "Don't Let's Go Again" is especially forgettable, though on the other hand, there are clear highlights such as the stark poetry of "Restless." Further, the consistent theme of ambivalence within relationships becomes tedious after a while when no new insight is extracted.
