Chromophobia
$9.79 Although not quite as stellar as its predecessor, 1979's 'DUTY NOW FOR THE FUTURE' is a solid second release by those loveable spuds from Ohio. With hindsight, DUTY helped bridge the gap between the quirky weirdness of their debut and their more accessible third album, FREEDOM OF CHOICE, which would prove to be their breakthrough commercial success (achieving gold status and spawning the classic new wave hit "Whip It"). Replacing Brian Eno as producer is another Bowie disciple, Ken Scott (ZIGGY STARDUST, HUNKY DORY), who helps guide the band towards a more "rock" sound.
Devo tackled the Stones' "Satisfaction" on their debut, and on DUTY they cover the '60s surf/spy hit "Secret Agent Man." Other highlights include the epic "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA," which twists and turns for six paranoia-filled minutes, the fast and spastic early concert favorite "Red Eye Express," and "The Day My Baby Gave Me A Surprize." You'll also find two instrumentals--the ...
| | LCD Soundsystem CDs (2005) Digipak
Chromophobia
$16.09 Finally unleashed for the length of a full album, Murphy's muse still offers up plenty of John-Foxx-will-rise-again retro synth sounds, but he expands his palette as well. The irresistibly catchy "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House" is a funky, riff-driven party-starter that compares favorably to vintage Beck, and "On Repeat" indicates a fascination with the lyrical cadences of the Fall's Mark E. Smith. Moving further back in time to the art-rock era, "Never as Tired as When I'm Waking Up" is a dreamy tune that could have slipped unnoticed off Pink Floyd's MEDDLE, and "Great Release" is an unabashed, slow-building Eno homage. To keep the club kids happy, a bonus disc featuring LCD's previous singles (including the aforementioned faves) is tacked on to an already-attractive package.
As half of the NYC underground-legend production team DFA, James Murphy was responsible for countless crafty retoolings of late-1970s/early-'80s sounds of the electroclash/post-punk-revival variety. Wearing his "artist" hat under the LCD Soundsystem moniker, Murphy concocted his own minimal-synth club hits, full of ...
| | Field From Here We Go Sublime CD (2007) (Import) Germany
Chromophobia
$14.79 On 2007's FROM HERE WE GO SUBLIME, Axel Willner's first full-length Kompakt outing under the moniker of the Field, the Swedish electronica artist presents a mesmerizing set of minimalist techno that garnered international raves. Sometimes working in the same dreamy vein as fellow Europeans Ulrich Schnauss and M83 (see the arctic opener, "Over the Ice"), Willner streamlines that aesthetic, and steers it into deep house and trance territory (the propulsive "Good Things End"), resulting in an album ...
| | Pantha Du Prince This Bliss CD (2007) (Import) Germany
Chromophobia
$16.09 Hendrik Weber's deep house compositions, while remaining at heart minimalist, contain an elegant lushness, culling influence from worlds numbering industrial, indie rock, new romantic, new age among many others. THIS BLISS, his second go-around as Pantha Du Prince, finds the artist dabbling in longer, more fluid themes, crafting melodies that even veer into a pop crevice somewhere between Kraftwerk and Orbital. There's a hypnotic passion underlying the German's creations propelling tracks like the pulsating "Asha" and the complex rave-inducing "Walden 2."
2007 release from DJ, producer, composer and furniture maker Hendrik Weber's (aka Pantha Du Prince), his second full-length release on Dial. Weber has always explored new worlds of sound under pseudonyms such as Panthel, Gluhen4 or as bassist of Hamburg-based group, Stella. This Bliss is an album that aspires to push all boundaries from the heart of House and Techno music. Pantha Du Prince invites invasions and emissions as a source of inspiration to motivate the interpretation of his music. Before concluding that Pantha Du Prince is taking us down a road of obscurity -- immediately refrain from such thoughts. This Bliss is one of the most harmonious and blissful audio journeys in Dance music arguably heard in the past ...
| | Liquid Liquid CD (1997)
Chromophobia
$9.59 LIQUID LIQUID compiles the three EPs that were the original band's entire recorded output and adds some previously unreleased live tracks.
They were among the first to merge new wave and disco aesthetics, and this compilation marks the first time this seminal New York band's canon has ever been available on CD. The three EPs (they never made a full album) and assorted live tracks collected here make a case for the band as punk-funk pioneers. Liquid Liquid hailed from the same early '80s NYC art-dance scene as Bush Tetras, ESG and Konk, whose grooves continued to be sampled reverently by hip DJs for years after the bands' demise. The minimalist, dub-influenced funk grooves that are the core of the band's songs have a hypnotic quality, but are never less than invigorating.
NY scenesters like Richard Edson (Sonic Youth, Konk) and Elliott Sharp make guest appearances on trumpet and bass clarinet, respectively. It's the manic polyrhythms laid down by the band on congas, marimba, drums and other percussive devices that contribute most significantly to the ambiance of their thinking man's funk, though. The previously unreleased live cuts are an unexpected bonus, showcasing the band at their most frenetic and exciting.
