Emerald Land is David McCabe’s first album of original music, and as should be obvious from the title it has an Irish theme. Although English, he has Irish ancestry and says all his favourite artists come from Ireland — Gary Moore, Enya and U2 - and the album is something of an homage to them. The album really evolved from the title track, which was written first, and most of the others were inspired whilst visiting the country. His instrument is the electric guitar, and Gary Moore’s influence is obvious on these tracks, along with something of Enya’s synthesizers and backing voices, and traditional Irish music. Ennio Morricone, known for his film scores, has also been a big influence, with his trademark operatic backing vocals.All except the title track are instrumentals, making full use of the expressive capabilities of the electric guitar, with synthesiser or rhythm guitar backing. Piano, strings, pipes, bells and harps are also used judiciously - but all from a guitar-synth! The tracks on the album cover different aspects of Irish life. The horse is close to the Irish heart, and 'Crazy Horse' is a lively track that conjures up its image in all its power, grace and freedom. 'Sunrise' is not especially Irish, but links into the theme of the natural world, which has always been a strong element of the Emerald Isle. 'Ire', admittedly something of a pun, is a boisterous tune that expresses some of the anger that has been present in the country during its turbulent history. 'The Old Country' is a lyrical, very Irish-sounding and emotive tune with some blazing guitar work towards the end. 'Eire' is another very Irish-sounding track that seems to just evoke an image of the place. The title track is a mesmerising celebration of Ireland that is surely destined to become an Irish anthem.
