With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. With Angels, the Helsinki vampires known as the 69 Eyes offer a flip-side sequel to their 2005 effort, Devils. "The slutty rocker to the seductive sister" is the way the goth-metal band perfectly puts it, and if Devils earned the band a loyal following among the black-nail-polish underground, Angels is designed to blow the 69 Eyes up to Type O Negative status (none of this applies to their native Finland, where they are already absolutely huge). Deep-voiced and dead as far as you can tell, Jyrki 69's lead vocals still bear a strong resemblance to Peter Steele -- or shamelessly rip him off if you believe the detractors -- but there's a new, strikingly loose way he uses his pipes that brings to mind Suicide's Alan Vega at his most Elvis. The Jim Steinman jones the band had on Devils is blown up to even bigger proportions with layered productions from the returning team of Hiili Hiilesmaa and Johnny Lee Michaels, along with lyrics that are filled with epic rock fantasies and bats out of hell. The single "Perfect Skin" juggles pop, lust, and dark humor with an unforgettable hook, and the title track is a behemoth on which both Sisters of Mercy and Nightwish fans can agree. Where were you born? Long Island. Where did you grow up? Mattituck, Long Island.When did you start playing music? I started playing the piano when I was really young like 4 or 5 and started playing the guitar when I was about fourteen.How many instruments do you play? Guitar, Piano, Harmonica and a little violin. Where’s your favorite place to play? I used to really like to play on Block Island or at three mile Harbor in East Hampton but a lot has changed since then.Who’s your favorite person to play with? I can’t answer that it has the potential to make too many people mad at me. But Billy Walters and his two personalities have been playing with me since the beginning and we can read each other well, especially during unplugged shows. Influences?Dylan, The Beatles, Mason Jennings. What is in your CD player at home? I think Parachutes by Cold Play, August and Everything After, and The Magical Mystery Tour. When do you write most of your music? I write when I’m traveling, ideas come to me on a bus or train or subway. I think you have to keep moving in order to be a good songwriter. What did you do before you started making music? Snowboarded everyday, bartended, I liked getting people drunk, I was a lobsterman. I played a lot of shows at a lot of colleges when I was in college. When did you first record? I think I did my first demo in like six hours in the summer of 2002. What do you have in the works? I have a solo project that will be released hopefully in the beginning of June. It is just wrapping up. And the band I’m in will start laying the groundwork for a demo sometime this spring.
