As had been amply proved by their dismally recorded studio albums, Y&T's songs were simply made to be heard in a live setting. Arriving at the tail end of the band's association with A&M Records, Open Fire is hardly exceptional by live-album standards, but the difference between these performances and their studio counterparts is so immense that one has to wonder if the performances are even by the same band. Every forced lyric, every lame arrangement, and every lost nuance are forgotten as Y&T come to explosive life on this astounding set, which revisits the best moments from the band's early-'80s career, including "Rescue Me," "Forever," "Barroom Boogie," and "Open Fire." Later material like "Go for the Throat" and "Summertime Girls" is less impressive, and the inclusion of an old track ("25 Hours a Day") from their late-'70s origin as Yesterday & Today comes off as pedestrian at best. But a final encore of the beautifully cathartic "I Believe in You" is guaranteed to send everyone home happy. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | Sophie Ellis Bextor Trip The Light Fantastic CD (2007) Import
Open Fire songs
$17.45 A welcome return from one of the most sophisticated and distinctive voices in British dance-pop, Trip The Light Fantastic is easily Sophie Ellis-Bextor's most dynamic album to date. Markedly more consistent than its enjoyable-but-spotty predecessors, but also -- more importantly -- far more gutsy, varied and vital, its many strong points are the most exciting of her career. It had been four years since her previous album -- a considerable span in pop terms -- but Ellis-Bextor's music has always hearkened to smartly classicist, ...

| | Kix CD (1981)
Open Fire CD music
$7.59 This 1981 album introduced the world to the tongue-in-cheek rock & roll style of Kix. Of all the bands to get lumped in under the "hair metal" tag, Kix was the one of the most unique and adventurous. In fact, the "hair metal" tag was unfair to the band since its pop-metal stylings drew as much inspiration from bubblegum pop and new wave as it did from hard rock. This impressive debut finds its one of a kind sound fully realized: "Heartbeat" welds a yearning pop melody straight out of a teen idol hit onto a bouncing, staccato new wave guitar riff worthy of the Cars, and "Contrary Mary" weds the bubblegum chant of ...

Flaming Demonics, James Chance's fourth album (and the third released under the James White moniker) continues the pattern set by his previous release, Sax Maniac. Overlaying brutally dissonant, atonal sax solos over spare, minimal ...
