Behind the fighting men are those who send them into battle. Clark Gable faces tough decisions and top-brass resistance as he grapples with the threat of Nazi jet factories. This adaptation of William Wister Haines's play examines World War II air force generals engaged in life-or-death decision-making processes and their struggle to choose between effectiveness and morality. Director Sam Wood's film is a compelling study of a commanding officer's struggle between doing what is right and what looks good to the public.
Silver-screen giant Clark Gable plays General K.C. (Casey) Dennis, a man determined to destroy the production of a new German jet plane via precision aerial bombings during daylight hours. Walter Pidgeon plays his superior officer, General Roland Kane, a man all too aware that military bosses in D.C. are looking over their shoulders to determine whether daylight bombing is effective. To boot, Dennis is consistently dogged by newspaperman Elmer Brockhurst, who reports back to the home front regarding the heavy economic and manpower losses that result from Dennis's orders. Soon Dennis finds his tactics directly opposed by Arthur Malcolm (Edward Arnold), a powerful congressman, and General Kane ceases to support Dennis.
There are no combat scenes in COMMAND DECISION. Instead, the script brilliantly supplies an insightful examination of the politics of war and the insides of a man brutalized by them. Gable turns in a fine performance, which is easy to miss amid the brilliance that surrounds it--Van Johnson, Walter Pidgeon, and Edward Arnold all shine in COMMAND DECISION. Previous to filming, Gable was decorated as a war hero for the dangerous air force missions he flew over Germany. Command Decision movie DVD
$16.89 The title refers to the night when three men, Randy (Matt Dillon), his cousin Carl (Paul Reiser) and Detective Dehling (John Goodman), all meet Jewel Valentine (Liv Tyler) at a bar called McCool's. Actually, they don't so much meet her as fall under her spell when they first lay eyes on her. In her clinging red dress she looks like a cross between a beautiful damsel in distress and the Lady In Red looking for John Dillinger. The story begins with Randy, desperate to be rid of Jewel, hiring a sleazy hitman, played by Michael Douglas in an outré toupee. His story of how Jewel led him to ruin, filmed in a stylized flashback bathed in blue, is mirrored ...

Command Decision video
$10.29 DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK is John Ford's first film in Technicolor (which recently perfected far richer shadings of color than had previously been possible), and the director uses it to stunning effect. The film stars Henry Fonda as Revolutionary War-era farmer Gilbert Martin, who, in 1776, has returned with his well-born wife, Lana (Claudette Colbert), to his rustic cabin in the increasingly dangerous Mohawk River valley. At first unaccustomed to the harsh physical challenges of frontier life, Lana adjusts to the work at hand and is soon able to help her husband in the fields. Shortly after they learn that the colonies are at war with the British, their farmhouse is attacked and burned to the ground by a party of Tory-led Indians. The feisty Widow McKlennar (Edna May Oliver) provides temporary shelter for the ...

$66.49 This set contains two documentaries and one feature film all by the German auteur. Special features including deleted scenes, featurettes, and commentary accompany each film.
LIGHTNING OVER WATER: Director Wim Wenders assembled this experimental project with the legendary American director Nicholas Ray. Shot as Ray was dying of cancer, the film finds him surrounded by family and friends as he reflects on his life and career. As he tells some amazing stories about his successes and compromises, it becomes clear that Wenders and Ray are creating something that is far more than a documentary, a film about a great artist and the nature of collaboration.
THE AMERICAN FRIEND: Jonathan Zimmermann, a German picture-framer, is dying of a rare blood disease. Despite his illness, the happily married Jonathan does his best to live each day to the fullest with his wife and child. But when Tom Ripley, a cunning American gangster, learns of Jonathan's sickness, he convinces the dying man--deeply concerned about his family's financial future--to work as a hit man for a big payoff. Will Jonathan get in over his head by making a deal that could ruin what's left of his life? German director Wim Wenders delivers ...

| | Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day DVD (2008) Full Frame; Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled
Command Decision video
$15.19 As in MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS and BEING JULIA, this period comedy brings wit and style to its depiction of 1930s London. Based on Winifred Watson's novel, MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY begins with the title character, a frumpy middle-aged governess winningly played by Frances McDormand (FARGO), being turned away from her employment agency. After losing her job prospects and all her earthly possessions in a mishap, Guinevere Pettigrew isn't sure where her next meal is coming from. But some cleverness leads her to the door of aspiring actress Delysia Lafosse, who needs a social secretary to juggle her three men: a nightclub owner (Mark Strong), a son of a theater producer (Tom Payne), and a piano player (Lee Pace). The first two offer her a chance at stardom, but the pianist can't give her anything but love. In a single day, Miss Pettigrew helps Delysia navigate the ever-stormy waters of love, while she learns that romance may not only be reserved for the young.
With its witty script and jazzy score, MISS PETTIGREW may seem feather-light at times, but there's an undercurrent of sadness that gives the comedy a bit of weight. World War II is just about to come to London, and the echoes of the previous war still ...
