CYNICAL PULP NOVELIST HOLLY MARTINS TRAVELS TO SHADOWY, POSTWAR VIENNA, ONLY TO FIND HIMSELF INVESTIGATING THE MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF AN OLD FRIEND, BLACK-MARKET OPPORTUNIST HARRY LIME, AND THUS BEGINS THIS LEGENDARY TALE OF LOVE, DECEPTION, AND MURDER. THANKS TO BRILLIANT PERFORMANCES BY JOSEPH COTTEN, ALIDA VALLI, AND ORSON WELLES; ANTON KARASS EVOCATIVE ZITHER SCORE; GRAHAM GREENES RAZOR-SHARP DIALOGUE; AND ROBERT KRASKERS HAUNTING DEEP-FOCUS SHOTS, OFF-KILTER ANGLES, AND DRAMATIC USE OF LIGHT AND SHADOW, THE THIRD MAN, DIRECTED BY THE INIMITABLE CAROL REED, ONLY GROWS IN STATURE AS THE YEARS PASS.

Carol Reed reached the peak of his form with this classic noir, an elegy for American innocence and European elegance. Joseph Cotten, in fine form, stars as unemployed pulp-novelist Holly Martins. When he arrives in post-WWII Vienna on the promise of a job from his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles), he finds that Lime has recently died in a dubious car accident. Against the advice of British sector authority Major Calloway (Trevor Howard), who accuses Lime of criminal behavior, the indignant Martins decides to stay to investigate his friend's death. He searches this city of rubble-strewn streets and bombed-out buildings, earnestly questioning Lime's associates, a cynical, war-weary collection of black-market hustlers. At length, he realizes that the stories he's hearing are so full of contradiction, he's getting nowhere. Yet, he's entranced by Lime's beautiful girlfriend, Anna Schmidt (Alida Valli), who, unlike the others, seems to have loved Harry. Calloway finally provides evidence of Harry's treachery, and Martins, despondent, is about to return home when everything changes in a shadowed moment. THE THIRD MAN is a masterpiece of melancholia featuring extraordinary writing, acting, and directing, as well as a classic zither score by Anton Karas. Welles is memorable as the seductive villain, but the true star may be the camera work of Robert Krasker, which transforms Vienna into a coruscating, expressionist nightmare.

This classic noir mystery, from the team of Carol Reed and Graham Greene, is generally considered to be the best filmwork of both of these estimable talents. THE THIRD MAN features Joseph Cotten as Holly Martins, a pulp novelist who has come to post-WWII Vienna with the promise of work from his friend, Harry Lime (Orson Welles). When he finds that Lime has just been killed in a questionable car accident, he decides to remain in the city to investigate his friend's demise.

THE THIRD MAN is number 57 on the American Film Institute's list of America's 100 Greatest Movies. Winner of the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The Home Vision Cinema VHS version is the Uncut British Version from the Criterion Collection Video Master. The print is from the Janus Collection.

Third Man Quotes/Excerpts:

"In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance; in Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace, and what did they produce? The cuckoo clock."--Harry Lime (Orson Welles)

"...The greatest of the foreign-based film noir dramas..." -- Mike Clark, USA Today

"...Carol Reed's gripping 1949 thriller was proclaimed as the best British film of all time by the British Film Institute..." -- Simon Brew, Total Film

"Lime is a character of volatile complexity..." -- Premiere Staff, Premiere

"Welles could play the most seductive of villains; his amoral, charismatic Harry Lime is one of his most unforgettable." -- Andy Webster, Premiere

"[A]n unassailable classic....[Welles'] speech comparing the ruthless Borgia family and the peace-loving Swiss still raises goose bumps." -- Grade: A-- Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly

"...The film's disenchanted romanticism exerts an irresistible charm. Nearly half a century on, that charm hasn't diminished in the least..." -- Philip Kemp, Sight and Sound

5 stars Film Noir at its best!
Carol Reed gives us a movie nearly as good as Orson Welles' Citizen Kane. Orson Welles was the pre-eminent movie maker, giving us the standard by which all others were to be measured. The only reason his output wasn't twice that of Hitchcock is that Citizen Kane stepped on the toes of William Randolph Hearst, who did his best to kill Orson's Hollywood career from that day forward. Yet Orson kept finding ways to produce, direct, and appear in films. One can't help but think that Orson Welles had more to do with this movie than simply appearing in it--his artistic fingerprints are on every dark and shadowy frame. Brilliantly filmed, acted, set, and scored, this one's a keeper for any serious Film Noir collector. Excellent re-mastering and restoration, and worth every penny. Just buy it!

5 stars A real gem, a masterpiece....!
A must see for all classic-films fans. Inspite of its age it is still memorable, and draws you glued to the screen, even if you watch it for the 10th. time!! The score by Anton Karas is not only outstanding but very much haunting!! Criterion did a wonderful job with the extras on this one, and desrve every cent of the price. It is alweays a pleasure to see Alida Vali (of Hitchcock's "The Paradine Case"). She was the perfect example of 'femme fatal'!! Not to be missed!!!!

5 stars Great TV from the early years
Solid performances from Michael Rennie. You can see where programs like the Saint, the Avengers, I, Spy, and so on developed from. Not sure why Jonathan Harris went on to Lost in Space, though. Or Werner Klemperer to Hogan's Heroes.

Castle Of Cagliostro DVD  (1979) Widescreen

Third Man film
DVD $12.85  5 stars
The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films in favor of more serious fare; CAGLIOSTRO shows, however, that he is quite capable of delivering the goods in this genre. Based on the Lupin comics by the artist Monkey Punch, CAGLIOSTRO is a great heist/chase film that surpasses most similar live action fare and breezes by with more than a couple of inventive set pieces, as well as some excellent comic dialogue. 100 minute Japanese animation DVD. Master thief Lupin III, aka the wolf, and his right-hand gunman Jigen are hot o n the trail of a counterfeiter who swindled them...but they find far more than they are looking for when their search leads them to the secluded European country of Cagliostro.

Director Goro Taniguchi (INFINITE RYVIUS, S-CRY-ED) fashions another imaginative take on intergalactic space travel in his sci-fi series PLANETES. In the year 2075, travel between the earth, moon, and various space stations has become a routine part of human existence. But the increased traffic leaves behind floating pieces of debris that present a deadly hazard for traveling starships and must be cleared by a squad of hardworking debris collectors. As the collectors' newest recruit, idealistic Ai Tanabe quickly loses her enthusiasm for outer space when she joins the Half-Section unit and meets her cynical new partner, Hachimaki. But Tanabe soon discovers that hauling in space debris is not only dull and monotonous--it carries with it a unique set of difficulties and dangers. PLANETES avoids the wild, fantastical tropes of much sc-fi anime in favor of realistic hard science that emphasizes character development and gorgeously rendered animation. This collection presents the whole series in its entirety. Animated; Standard Screen; English Subtitles

Stefan (Tom Cruise) is determined to leave the sleepy Pennsylvania mining town of Ampipe where he is growing up. An exceptional athlete, Stef sees football as his ticket out. His pursuit of a scholarship, however, brings him at odds with his combative coach (Craig T. Nelson). While rebelling against his coach and his town, Stef takes up with Lisa Litski (Lea Thompson), an attractive schoolmate and talented saxophone player. Cruise graduated to leading man status with this film, one of many early 1980s pictures with strong teen identities. His sexy, defiant presence carries the film. First-time director Michael Chapman (cinematographer of TAXI DRIVER and many other films) proves himself especially adept in capturing the intense football sequences. Christopher Penn, Craig T. Peter Sellers returns as the world's most accident-prone detective in the second film of Blake Edwards' Pink Panther series. When Maria Gambrelli (Elke Sommer), a parlormaid in the employ of Parisian plutocrat Benjamin Ballon (George Sanders), is accused of murdering her lover, Clouseau is assigned to the case. The bumbling detective insists on the young beauty's innocence--much to the dismay of Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Herbert Lom)--despite significant evidence to the contrary. Even after Maria is caught red-handed (holding bloody shears, to be precise) near the body of a murdered gardener, Clouseau remains intent on her innocence, and continues to free her from prison time and time again. When the corpse of the Ballons' former maid, Dudu (Ann Lynn), turns up, all evidence leads to Maria's involvement, but not, of course, in the eyes of the wily Clouseau. Clouseau takes care to thoroughly investigate every angle of the case (even if it does require a stakeout at a nudist colony) to nab the real killer. Or could it have been Maria all along? Possibly the best entry in the long-running series, this rapid-fire farce is a showcase for Sellers, whose perfectly timed deadpan verbal mangling and virtuoso displays of physical ineptitude define comic genius. As always, the film is unimaginable without Henry Mancini's catchy score. Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English
