Electric guitarist Joel Harrison is somewhat of a pioneer in following paths that are different than most so-called fusion guitarists. From hard-edged and exploratory progressive sounds to country amalgams and ethnic infusions, Harrison has been one to keep an ear pinned to the tracks for, as you never know what direction he'll approach from. In the case of Harbor, a nautical theme is present, but coming from the deck of a very large freighter hauling precious metals. Second guitarist Nguyên Lê galvanizes the steely tone while longtime bandmate alto saxophonist David Binney adds the ballast and balance that keep the ship moving forward. This collection has a signature sound of Harrison's concept, de-emphasizing solos and concentrating on a shared ownership, and the music has a suspended-in-time feeling while remaining fully contemporary. "Hudson Shining" (sans Lê) expresses Harrison's ethos perfectly, as he and Binney shout hopeful outcries as a springboard for extended melody lines that resonate infinitely. Revealing the musicians at their most animated, "End Time" is a bit frenetic, very involved in the 7/8 time frame, and demarcates a point where contemporary classical composer Olivier Messiaen meets Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas from the Miles Davis fusion bands. Harbor is not without its languid and introspective moments; the title track with the echoing guitars of Harrison and Lê combines the sexiness of Marvin Gaye with the thoughtfulness of Bill Evans. A tribute to Atlantic City, "American Babylon" is moody and dour, with Lê contrastingly on fire, and fully demonstrates the partnership of the differently able guitarists. The extraordinary percussionist Jamey Haddad also appears on the six tracks that include Lê, while Satoshi Takeishi and the rising-star bassist Stephan Crump appear on another two apiece. Binney is a treat throughout, asserting his alto as a true original voice in modern jazz. If guitar hero mavens were wise, they would be well served to keep abreast of the future activities of Harrison, a visionary and unique player in contemporary jazz. ~ Michael G. Nastos
Personnel: Joel Harrison (guitar); Nguyên Lê (guitar); David Binney (alto saxophone); Marty Wehner (trombone); Henry Hey (piano); Gildas Boclé, Stephan Crump (bass instrument); Jamey Haddad, Satoshi Takeishi, Jordan Perlson (drum).
Down Beat (p.78) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Harrison plays smart and deliberate guitar, but it's the stylish ensemble playing on these performances that makes HARBOR a worthwhile listening experience." JazzTimes (p.71) - "HARBOR is delicate and stunning. Harrison's compositions are modal labyrinths that unfold outward, some into sinister places, others into dreamlike pathos." Purchase Harbor CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Ted Brown Free Spirit CD (1989)
Harbor album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse them with fresh ideas. ...
| | Bill Frisell History, Mystery CDs (2008)
Harbor CD music
$17.85 Guitar maestro Bill Frisell outdoes himself in ambition and diversity on the two-disc HISTORY, MYSTERY. Performing with a rich string-laden octet, the artist threads together 30 tracks, some of which derive from his collaboration with cartoonist Jim Woodring entitled "Mysterio Sympatico," and others drawn from the music Frisell composed for the NPR series STORIES FROM THE HEART OF THE LAND.
As always, Frisell's eclectic style freely blends genres together, mixing chamber music with ...

| | Joel Harrison Harrison On Harrison: Jazz Explorations Of George Harrison CD (2005)
Harbor album
$13.89 Harrison on Harrison finds jazz guitarist Joel Harrison investigating the music of rock icon George Harrison. Featuring a stellar ensemble including, among others, saxophonist David Liebman, pianist Uri Caine and drummer Dan Weiss, Harrison has crafted an adventurous and forward-thinking album that celebrates not only the former Beatle's superb songcraft, but also his sense of musical exploration. That exploration found George Harrison delving into everything from British folk music to gospel, psychedelic rock and ultimately Indian music. Joel Harrison fully embraces such eclecticism here, bringing all these styles to bear on tracks like "Within You Without You" (off the Beatles' 1967 classic Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band), expanding the raga-psych elements of the original into a post-bop wilderness of angular improvisation. Similarly, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" goes from a woozily funky Indian beat on the main verse, to a ...
| | Music Of New Mexico: Native American Tradition CD (1992)
Harbor CD music
$13.85 This is a 67-minute compilation of Pueblo, Navajo, and Apache music from New Mexico, recorded in the early '90s. Ceremonial two-step and round dance songs are represented, as well as some flute pieces and a few numbers featuring only singing and guitar that come close to singer/songwriter territory. The ceremonial pieces, used as the name implies for serious ceremonies rather than entertainment, emphasize chanting and rattling percussion, and are not likely to interest most listeners looking for casual entertainment. The songs by Sharon Burch and Geraldine Barney, on the other hand, are rather in the straight folk vein, though Burch sings in Navajo and uses the techniques that are found in much Navajo music. ~ Richie Unterberger

| | Paul D Miller Viral Sonata CD (1997)
Harbor music CDs
$11.15 Paul D. Miller, a.k.a DJ Spooky, calls this a 'hip-hop' record, though there's little hip and no hop. His tongue is firmly planted cheekwise, but there's no denying Miller's high concept album. VIRAL SONATA is the stuff of hi-jacked groove anarchy, the deification of the sampler and the turntable, ...
| | John Coltrane My Favorite Things CD (1961)
Harbor songs
$8.89 MY FAVORITE THINGS is a landmark album in jazz history. On the previous year's GIANT STEPS, Coltrane had established his credentials as a bebop master, composer and group leader. By 1960, he was ready to move on. On MY FAVORITE THINGS, Coltrane is in transition, searching for another level to which to raise his music. A new group featuring McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass and Elvin Jones on drums supports Coltrane on this experiment in ...
