With his aptly titled 2007 sophomore album, MAKE SURE THEY SEE MY FACE, promising young singer-songwriter Kenna seems intent on upping his profile. Coming across like the alt-rock counterpart to John Legend, the Ethopian-born performer (whose last name is Zemedkun) is rooted in a bright 1980s New Wave-influenced sound, but FACE is clearly a 21st-century album, particularly with its upfront production, courtesy of Neptunes Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams. Highlights of the outing include the urgent "Out of Control (State of Emotion)" and the funky, post-punk-tinged "Say Goodbye to Love."
Kenna's biggest problem, disregarding the multiple delays that accompany his releases -- although the two may be related -- is how to categorize his music, and therefore, how to market it.
