Musically adequate but utterly faceless, the Benjamins' Chronicles of the Garden State is basic mainstream mall-punk circa 2007. Singer Joe DeGenarro's voice is as forgettable and bland as his lyrics, which are themselves weirdly cold and detached. It's as if someone tried to write about teenage angst without ever having actually experienced it, so random lines were merely taken out of the MySpace blogs of total strangers and strung together over third-generation emo-pop riffs cribbed from other, better records. The ultra-clean production keeps every note in its place, adding to the album's stilted, artificial vibe. There really isn't a hint of an honest emotion anywhere to be found on Chronicles of the Garden State. Even the title sounds like they're trying to remind their target audience of that movie they really liked a couple years ago. ~ Stewart Mason
The most sought after cover act in the NorthEastern U.S since the turn of the millennium, the band made the usually formidable transition to an original act a smooth one. After throwing original singles into their cover arsenal and gaining positive response, the band wrote, produced, and released, "GO", their first full-length CD in May of 2004. Its release marked a turning point in their career as musical artists. The album not only sold out, but solidified the respect the band earns from its fans as well as the gain of those not familiar with the group's musical and creative abilities. While maintaining their top cover act status and with fans everywhere clamoring for new original tracks, the band entered the recording studio. Under the pressure of the fans' high demand for quality, they emerged over a year later with their highly anticipated sophomore album "The Chronicles of the Garden State." Released nationwide in April of 2007 to critical acclaim, the band's star power shined bright with its "high energy, modern arena-rock" and was subsequently gobbled up by eager and adoring fans everywhere. The Benjamins have since received airplay from local and college radio stations in the the tri-state area including G ROCK and KC 101. They have also opened for national acts including: Cheap Trick, Goo Goo Dolls, Sponge, Third Eye Blind, Lost Prophets, and Lifehouse. With an aggressive grassroots-to-big-stages drive and no signs of slowing down, The Benjamins will continue to set the trend of an era and "rock out" for fans old and new in 2008 and beyond!

Chronicles Of The Garden State album
$12.15 Back in the '70s, many white rock critics tried to convince their readers that the decade's soul, funk, and disco simply couldn't hold a candle to '60s R&B. But most connoisseurs of '70s R&B weren't buying it, which is why they turned to the late, great Soul magazine (the Vibe of its era) for information and relied on more insightful writers like Leonard Pitts Jr. and Steven Ivory (two regular Soul contributors). And these days, the theory that '70s R&B is horribly inferior to '60s R&B is seldom tossed around -- in the '90s and 2000s, countless artists (everyone from Lisa Stansfield to Jamiroquai) have been totally obsessed with the African-American music of the '70s. That is certainly the case with Arne Drescher, also known as Monsieur Leroc. Oh La La!, the German producer's second album, is yet another example of unapologetic '70s worship in the 2000s. This 2003 release is hardly an exact replica of '70s recordings; rather, Leroc's quirky, eccentric work fuses his '70s fixation with hip-hop, jazz, and club music. Oh La La! is an example of what journalist Nelson George calls retro-nuevo -- that is, R&B that worships the past without being oblivious to more contemporary sounds. Nonetheless, Leroc's passion for '70s soul and funk is impossible to miss, and this generally likable, if uneven, CD draws on influences that range from Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, and Sly Stone to De La Soul and the Jungle Brothers. At times, Leroc allows his eccentricity to get the best of him; parts of Oh La La! are too self-indulgent for their own good, and Leroc sometimes meanders when he should get to the point. But when Leroc successfully hits the right groove, Oh La La! becomes an enjoyably funky demonstration of the seemingly unending influence of '70s R&B. ~ Alex Henderson

Heart's sophomore effort, 1977's LITTLE QUEEN, was another strong and classic release for the band, despite the fact that they were caught up in a nightmarish legal wrangle with their former record label (who issued the half-finished album MAGAZINE shortly after LITTLE QUEEN, against the band's wishes).
The raging and venomous "Barracuda" remains one of Heart's best rock tracks, while the gorgeous "Love Alive" ...

$11.39 Based in East London & North Devon, UK, renfro are Tim Branney and Atom-James Draper. Tim sings the songs and Atom sources found-sounds. Together they write words and make music from recorded fragments. Renfro formed in late 2005, born from a mutual love of electronic music and West-Coast vocal harmonies. Tim & Atom like the avant-garde, but often find themselves wanting to sing along too. They enjoy Low and Midlake as much as they do Tod Dockstader and William Basinski, so their aim is to meld experimental electronic musical techniques with dream-pop songwriting.Early on, whilst waving microphones at elephant seals in Santa Cruz, Ca., they also wondered why pop songs couldn\'t be made using ...
