More than just the single from the recent My Life in Rooms long-player, Just More Drugs is a satisfying stand-alone release that showcases Barzin's primary strength. Three of the four extra songs on this 20-minute EP are radio sessions recorded in England and Barzin's native Canada, and the stripped-down rearrangements of the title track, "Mistakes," and "Let's Go Driving" put Mike Findlay's guitar and voice squarely in the spotlight where his soft but not weedy vocal style and the offhand introspection of his refreshingly non-emo lyrics can be best appreciated. In comparison, the new studio track "Queen Jane" sounds so much like the full-band slowcore haze of My Life in Rooms that one suspects it's simply an outtake. And in the context of the three minimalist radio sessions, the original album version of "Just More Drugs" sounds unnecessarily over-produced, its heavy effects and processing on Findlay's vocals suddenly ostentatious and slightly off-putting. Back in the day, EPs were both an effective place for experimentation and a low-impact way to display different sides of artists; Just More Drugs mostly fulfills the latter function, but by focusing on the aspect of their music that differentiates Barzin from their slowcore contemporaries, it also points in a potentially fruitful direction for future albums. ~ Stewart Mason
Personnel: Barzin (guitar); Mike Findlay (guitar); Mackenzie Jenkyns (vibraphone); Chris Stringer (bass instrument); James "Chip" Bunton (drums); Casey Mecija (background vocals).

Just More Drugs songs
$11.18 (MP3 Available for Download) With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, very modern in a way few ...

| | BGP Library Presents The James Bond Songbook CD (2006) (Import) Original Soundtrack; United Kingdom
Just More Drugs album
$12.35 The James Bond Songbook, as even the liner notes for the 2006 CD of the LP on BGP admit, was a cash-in album on the craze for all things James Bond that had enveloped the world by the mid-'60s. Cleverly, the record was titled to be credited to the James Bond Sextet -- even though such an ensemble didn't really exist -- as the bassist was indeed named James Bond, though he usually went by the name of Jimmy Bond as a Los Angeles session man. Even by the standards of exploitation albums, however, this might be a disappointment. Not for the quality of the music, which is pretty competent cool jazz, but because, though all 12 of the song titles are taken from Ian Fleming novels that were made into films (excepting Monty Norman's famous "James Bond Theme"), in fact the majority of these are not the soundtrack themes actually used in the movies. For when this came out in 1965, just four of these movies had actually been made. That means that only "Thunderball," "From Russia with Love," "007 Theme from Dr. No," and "Goldfinger" (as well as "James Bond Theme") correspond to the themes actually heard on the soundtracks. The rest of the numbers are small combo jazz instrumental compositions by Bond and Warren Baker that were inspired by the novels of the same titles. So those tracks don't sound particularly Bond-movie-like in either melody or arrangement, and even the five interpretations of themes actually used in Bond films are far jazzier and less menacing than the arrangements with which most Bond viewers are most familiar. It's not a bad record at all, and yes, by the standards of cash-in albums, the execution is well above average. Just realize what you're getting into, though, ...
