Following a bloody civil war, young Ofelia enters a world of unimaginable cruelty when she moves in with her new stepfather, a tyrannical military officer. Armed with only her imagination, Ofelia discovers a mysterious labyrinth and meets a faun who sets her on a path to saving herself and her ailing mother. But soon, the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur, and before Ofelia can turn back, she finds herself at the center of a ferocious battle between good and evil. Director: Guillermo Del Toro. Actors: Maribel Verdu, Sergi Lopez, Ivana Baquero. Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, PAN'S LABYRINTH is a thrilling, violent fairy tale set in post-Civil War Spain. Ivana Baquero stars as Ofelia, a young girl who moves with her mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil), into the home of Captain Vidal (Sergi López), in an abandoned mill in the middle of dark, dangerous woods. Vidal is leading his team of soldiers against resistance fighters--and he will do whatever is necessary to kill every last one of them. As Vidal bosses around the pregnant Carmen, a flying creature leads Ofelia through a garden labyrinth and into an underground cave ruled by Pan (HELLBOY's Doug Jones), who believes that Ofelia might be the lost princess of this strange yet magical place. To prove she is royalty, Ofelia must complete three tasks, each more difficult and terrifying than the previous one. Meanwhile, Vidal is becoming more and more paranoid, torturing and murdering seemingly at will. Del Toro (THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, HELLBOY, CRONOS) creates a marvelous battle between good and evil, between heroes and villains, in both the real world aboveground and the mystical land below. Baquero gives a compelling performance as the terrorized Ofelia, who is befriended by Mercedes (Maribel Verdú), a woman who harbors some secrets of her own. Stellar production design, superb special effects, and a stirring score by Javier Navarrete add to the scary fun. Selected as the closing-night entry in the 2006 New York Film Festival, PAN'S LABYRINTH is a captivating story that is not for the squeamish. SUPERB! I so enjoyed this movie. Ive never been one to avoid subtitles but, even if you do, this is an exception for it's effects and emotional charge. The performance in a childs role is engrossing. Never once was I distracted from the story telling by poor actors. Well told, well, acted, well worth veiwing more then once. Submitted by slarson003 (Surf City USA) Was This Review Helpful? stunning film Pan's labyrinth is one of the best movies of 2006. The movie is about a young girl named ofelia whose mother has just married a evil facist man named captain vidal. Her mother is pregnant and very sick but she and ofelia share a loving bond.one day ,ofelia follows an insect like creature who leads her to an ancient, abandoned labyrinth.ofelia then meets a faun who tells her that she is really a princess by the name of princess moannna. The faun tells her that to rejoin her real mother father, she must complete three tasks before the moon is full.I won't give away what the tasks are,but I will say that all of them are superbly done.Meanwhile, captain vidal leads his men in the fight to destroy the remains of the rebel army who hide out in the mountains and a rebel spy infiltrates the outpost by working as a maid. This film is visually stunning and deservedly won oscars for best art direction, best cinematography, and best makeup.Director and screenwriter guillermo del tor has fashioned an enthralling, totally original fable that is simply unforgetable.A must see. Perfect Sound, Perfect Picture, a Perfect Package! El Laberinto del Fauno (aka Pan's Labyrinth) is one of those rare thought-provoking movies that become classics a decade after its release. A fantasy tale intertwined with the era of General Franco in Spain during the 1940s, the plot follows a young girl as she explores a mystical labyrinth behind the hacienda of her new stepfather, a ruthless pro-Franco military officer who is determined to eradicate the nation of anti-Fascist rebels.
The HD DVD and Blu-Ray presentations both present the movie with DTS-ES HD 6.1ch master audio, but the standard DVD also comes with DTS-ES 6.1ch audio, so the HD duo provides the superior picture only. But I think it's worth the extra cost, particularly since the HD DVD will soon become a collectible. Submitted by Invincible_Irvine (Mission Viejo, CA) Was This Review Helpful? $10.29 Youth gangs took over the slums of Rio de Janiero during the 1960s and didn't relinquish their stronghold until the mid-1980s. Only a sucker wouldn't have turned to crime and this is exactly how naive teen Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) views himself. His attempts in illegal activity fail as he finds potential victims too friendly. Equally unsuccessful in love, he regularly fails to lose his virginity. Blood spills throughout the streets of the Ciudad de Deus as gang leader Li'l Ze (Leandro Firmino da Hora) is challenged by local druglords and a gang of pre-teens known as the Runts. Rocket shoots all of this action with his weapon of choice, a camera.

Pan's Labyrinth review
$31.25 In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, he's a perfect choice for a "shadow warrior." However, the arrangement suddenly changes when Shingen gets fatally wounded ...

$12.95 Based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, 300 takes over the screen like an invading horde. With all the gushing blood of a horror movie and the scope of a classic epic, the second film from Zack Snyder (who helmed the 2004 remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD) is an impressive visual spectacle. Gerard Butler (THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA) plays Leonidas, the king of ancient Sparta. The city is famous for its warrior philosophy, and Leonidas won't kneel to the demands of Persia's King Xerxes (LOST's Rodrigo Santoro). Instead, Leonidas leads his 300-strong army against Xerxes's army of millions. Meanwhile, his wife (Lena Headley, THE BROTHERS GRIMM) campaigns in Sparta for the city to send reinforcements as she butts heads with the treacherous Theron (Dominic West, THE WIRE).
With its gore and scale, 300 marks director Snyder as a possible successor to Peter Jackson's throne. Jackson also got his start in horror with BAD TASTE and DEAD ALIVE, and the two men share a penchant for ambitious battle scenes. The huge fights in 300 rival Jackson's efforts in the LORD OF THE RINGS films. David Wenham, who starred in two of the Tolkien-based films, plays Dilios, one of the Spartan soldiers. Though the cast doesn't boast any A-list stars, the actors ...
