Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy, and Jennifer Hudson star. Extras include exclusive never-before-seen Hudson performance, 11 extended musical numbers/alternate scenes, and Beyonce music video. The 1982 Tony-Award-winning musical DREAMGIRLS shimmies its way to the big screen with a stellar cast and undeniable sheen. Set in 1960s Detroit, DREAMGIRLS follows the commercial and cultural struggles of the R&B recording industry, through the rise of the Dreamettes (later shortened to just the Dreams) from backup singers to headlining international superstars. The trio--Deena (Beyoncé Knowles), Effie (Jennifer Hudson), and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose)--soon discover the harsh reality behind the glamour of fame and fortune, as the group's controlling and shady manager, Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), uses them to help build his musical empire and capture his dream of crossing over from R&B to the pop charts. He sacrifices Effie's immense talent as lead singer for Deena's stunning, more mainstream look to sell the sound, pushing marketable appeal over musical artisanship--and compromising the ambitions of his protégés.
Since its Broadway debut, DREAMGIRLS has been widely rumored to be inspired by the hugely successful girl-group the Supremes, as well as some of Motown's biggest players. Knowles's Deena portrays a Diana Ross-like character, radiant in miraculous recreations of the hairstyles and fashions that made Ross timeless, while Foxx's Taylor exemplifies the style of influential Motown Records founder Berry Gordy Jr. Former AMERICAN IDOL contestant Jennifer Hudson makes her feature-film debut delivering a knockout performance as the larger-than-life Effie, and Eddie Murphy is believable as the misunderstood James Brown-like character of Jimmy "Thunder" Early. Vibrant with colorful costumes and sleek backdrops, the film flows effortlessly from dialogue to musical numbers, each song capturing the richness of the talented cast and the essence of the era, endlessly soaring with fast-paced excitement and nonstop emotion. Dreamgirls Movie Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) one of the best I like a lot of movies but DREAMGIRLS happens to be one of my all-time favorites. Submitted by day (North carolina) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Not at all what I was hoping for. Really didn't get all that excited about this one. I thought it had a good story line, and two songs during the movie actually gave me chills, because they were such an impact on what was going on. I could have done without the singing during some of the conversations and arguments they were having. Loved the costumes! Jennifer Hudson was great with the attitude and all. Made me really dislike Beyonce, moreso than I did before. Okay watch, but not what everyone made it out to be. Submitted by lw (Iowa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$13.19 With THE SOUND OF REVENGE, Chamillionaire's 2005 Universal debut, the Houston-based rapper makes the most of his major-label deal, which includes his own Chamillitary imprint. On SOR, Paul Wall's former collaborator amps up that duo's signature chopped-and-screwed mixtape sound with heavy-duty arrangements that expertly showcase Chamillionaire's deep, husky voice. The introductory title track is marked by machine-gun beats, and establishes the album's fierce, restless mood. But the disc's highlight is the utterly infectious single "Turn It Up," which boasts Scott Storch's distinctive chiming production and an appearance by Lil' Flip. Although fellow Texan Bun-B, Krayzie Bone, and others also show up, REVENGE doesn't rely on guest shots; this is Chamillionaire's show through and through, as proven by each track on this assured and potent record.
Personnel: Chamillionaire (rap vocals); Killer Mike, Krayzie Bone, Lil Wayne, Pastor Troy, Rasaq, Scarface, Lil' Flip, Natalie , Bun B (rap vocals).

$7.09 At St. Benedict's prep school, the boys are disciplined, mannered, and ready to learn. But when a bad apple enters the classroom of the well-respected Mr. Hundert (Kevin Kline), chaos ensues. Sedgewick Bell (Emile Hirsch, DANGEROUS LIVES OF ALTAR BOYS) is a kid with a chip on his shoulder and a powerful senator for a father. He is a shock to the system of Mr. Hundert, whose firm moral standards and unshakeable integrity are genuinely challenged by Sedgewick's eye-rolling, rule-breaking, uncaring insubordination. Determined to change Sedgewick, "mold him," and bring out the strong and true character that he believes to be at the core of every student, Mr. Hundert makes Sedgewick his priority. However, their bond will remain a thorn in Mr. Hundert's side for years thereafter, even beyond his retirement.
Based on a short story by Ethan Canin, and directed by Michael Hoffman, THE EMPEROR'S CLUB uses crisp photography and convincing performances to communicate this wholesome tale of honor, morality, and trying to do what's right at all costs.

| | Svengali DVD (1931) Black & White; Unrated
Dreamgirls DVD
$7.19 In SVENGALI, John Barrymore reprises the stage role that garnered him critical acclaim. Svengali is a masterful and menacing hypnotist, bearded and unkempt, who draws a young woman, Trilby, into his lair. She has worked as a nude model for many artists and now, cajoled by Svengali's manipulative gift, she leaves behind her family in order to pursue a singing career on the concert circuit. What Trilby does not know, however, is that she can perform only upon the hypnotist's command. Svengali and Trilby are pursued by a young artist who, like Svengali, is madly in love with Trilby.
Director Archie Mayo's SVENGALI was the first sound version of this chilling tale, and remains the best. Marian Marsh is tantalizing as Svengali's unwitting victim, but the powerhouse performance belongs to John Barrymore, who was widely considered the greatest living American actor at the time of SVENGALI's release. Barrymore's performance in the title role stands among his very best efforts.

Dreamgirls movie DVD
$16.29 Michèle (AMELIE's adorable Audrey Tautou) is a 20-year-old tornado. With a bouncing, perfectly round Afro and a job posing for fashion photography, she boldly describes herself as a "top model," though her miniature physical size and girlish grin reveals her subdued, searching interior. Overloaded with passion and personality, she seeks a way to channel her spirituality into an identity. Buddhism works. So does Judaism, when she falls for François (Edouard Baer), a Jewish veterinarian. Her insistence that François prove his religious faith to her by observing Shabbat and obeying other rules causes him a lot of grief. But he adoringly complies. GOD IS GREAT, I'M NOT follows Michèle over a three-year period via the impulsive and always poetic exclamations she writes in her diary. The film shows how her aggressive attitude towards her family, François and all those she holds dear sometimes alienates her. She demands a lot of other people--mainly, that they live life with all the zest with which she has chosen to live her own, and sometimes those demands backfire on her. In total, GOD IS GREAT is an intense and beautiful film fueled by a powerful performance by Tautou, who rules the screen, and an inspired script from director Pascale Bailly.

| | Christmas In August DVD (1998) Widescreen; Special Edition; Subtitled
Dreamgirls film
$10.15 South Korean writer/director Jin-ho Hur makes his feature film debut with the achingly tender romantic drama CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST. Jung-won (Suk-kyu Han, TELL ME SOMETHING) is a terminally ill photo-shop owner determined to quietly live out his remaining days tending his store and spending time with his family and friends, who know nothing of his condition. When a quirky meter maid named Da-rim (Eun-ha Shim, ART MUSEUM BY THE ZOO) begins frequenting Jung-won's shop to develop photographs of parking violators, the pair strike up a cautious friendship that blossoms into an unspoken romance marked by emotional reserve--the couple never even kiss or display any outward sign of affection--and the mournful aura of Jung-won's impending death. As the camera lingers over the would-be lovers' quiet gestures and everyday moments, Hur's film becomes a heartbreakingly subtle evocation of love that avoids melodrama and owes much to the understated delicacy of legendary Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu. An audience favorite at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST is little-known gem that deserves a wider audience.

| | Four Brothers DVD (2005) Widescreen; Collector's Edition; Special Edition
Dreamgirls DVD
$8.49 When their beloved foster mother is killed in a holdup, four tough brothers reunite in their old Detroit neighborhood with revenge on their minds. Mark Wahlberg plays the brawl-hungry leader, Bobby. His brother, Angel (Tyrese Gibson), is a rowdy sailor with a high-strung Latina girlfriend (Sofi Vergara). Garrett Hedlun plays the young rock & roller of the clan. And Outkast's Andre 3000 is the family man whose tenuous mob connection may link him to the killers. Director John Singleton ably blends his action skills (SHAFT, 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS) and his gift for capturing the warm heart at the center of violent urban masculinity (BABY BOY, BOYZ N THE HOOD) to create a cooked-to-perfection gangsta stew. A soundtrack jammed with 1970s Motown classics roots everything firmly in the gritty tradition of the best of that decade's blaxploitation and urban revenge thrillers. Action highlights include a skidding car chase through snowy streets, some rough street hockey, and a bullet-intensive neighborhood shoot-out. With its talented, likeable cast, clever plotting, and sharp dialogue, this is a real crowd-pleaser that nonetheless doesn't shy away from depictions of street violence. There's not an ounce of fat on it--no extraneous romance, and no going "straight" at the end. Terrence Howard (HUSTLE & FLOW) is the well-meaning but ineffectual detective who tries to put a lid on the boys' rebelliousness. The spirits of Dirty Harry and Charles Bronson should be proud, and action fans will be well pleased.
