| | Michael Buble It's Time CD (2005)
Voyager: Trinidad Parang Christmas Celebration CD music
$12.79 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). With his smooth croon and charming persona, Buble is a natural performer, and, for fans of fearlessly romantic and infectiously swinging music, IT'S TIME is a sure bet.
Although it took more than a year of concerts and promotional appearances, Michael Bublé's 2003 debut disc of swinging pop standards finally ascended the Billboard album chart and landed at number 47. That peak may not seem impressive at first, but in a musical world dominated by rap or the latest flavor of alternative rock, Bublé's upper chart appearance was a real accomplishment and it sparked a renewed interest in music associated with great vocalists like Frank Sinatra. With his second studio disc, It's Time, Bublé builds upon the musical foundation he laid with his debut and demonstrates that he is much more that a flavor-of-the-month celebrity. Like his debut, It's Time mines the rich history of pop music as Bublé applies his own technique to classic standards and incorporates his Rat Pack sound into modern pop songs. Other pop vocal giants have made attempts to reinterpret the pop songs of their day with appalling results (Mel Tormé's version of "Sunshine Superman" comes to mind), but Bublé has

$19.59 Marley's consistent (certainly by reggae standards) album career has proffered many great songbooks, of which EXODUS is just one good example. The singles "One Love" and "Jamming" will be familiar to anyone with even a passing acquaintance with Jamaican music, but just as vital are the touchingly vulnerable love song "Waiting In Vain," the title track, and the splendid "Guiltiness." This was the first album to feature Junior Murvin on guitar, while the expressive use of horns adds new texture to the established quality of the Wailers' backing. Like most of his work, vital for a comprehensive collection.

| | Los Indios Tabajaras Maria Elena/Always In My Heart CD (1997)
Voyager: Trinidad Parang Christmas Celebration songs
$12.09 Maria Elena/Always in My Heart is a single-CD that combines Los Indios Tabajaras' two hit albums from the early '60s. Both records contain laid-back, folky and vaguely Brazilian arrangments of contemporary pop and traditional Brazilian folk songs. There's a lot of filler on the disc, but it's enjoyable filler and anyone looking for a single disc containing all the Los Indios Tabajaras they need, this is it. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Includes liner notes by Mark Marymont & Richard Joseph.
Contains 2 LPs on 1 CD: MARIA ELENA (1963)/ALWAYS IN MY HEART (1964).

| | Best Of The Irish Rovers. CD (1999)
Voyager: Trinidad Parang Christmas Celebration CD music
$8.39 Recorded between 1966 and 1971. Originally released on Decca. Includes liner notes and interviews with band members by Todd Everett.
Somewhere between Bing Crosby's vocal novelties back in the '40s and the current popularity of dance troupes like Riverdance and Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance, the flag of Irish music was held aloft in North America during the '60s by the success of the Irish Rovers. Patterning themselves after the Clancy Brothers (another popular group during the folk boom of the late '50s and early '60s), the group scored their 15 minutes of fame with the children's novelty, "The Unicorn," included here on Best of Irish Rovers. But the group was no children's novelty act, as witnessed by the preponderance of straight-ahead Irish drinking songs that spice up this 16-track collection. Highlights include "The Irish Rover," "Whiskey on a Sunday," "Mrs. Crandall's Boarding House," Lucy Simon's "Winken, ' Blinken' and Nod," "Nancy Whiskey," "Goodbye Mick and Goodbye Pat," and Gordon Lightfoot's "Did She Mention My Name." Those who are only familiar with the group's one big hit will find much to love in this collection. Excellent notes from Todd Everett, too. ~ Cub Koda

| | Gordon Bok Turning Toward The Morning CD (1975)
Voyager: Trinidad Parang Christmas Celebration music CDs
$14.35 The first recorded collaboration by folksingers Gordon Bok, Ann Mayo Muir and Ed Trickett is not only the best record in their substantial catalog, but it's also one of the finest folk albums ever committed to vinyl. The trio's voices do not blend smoothly in any conventional sense-Bok's is a rumbly bass-baritone, while Trickett's is a reedy high tenor and Muir's a flute-like mezzo. But what their ensemble sound lacks in creaminess it more than makes up for in rich, edgy power-when they harmonize on "How Can I Keep from Singing" or "Three Score and Ten," the effect is hair-raisingly beautiful. More frequently they take turns singing lead, though, with one or more of the others pitching in a harmony part on the chorus. The group draws on numerous traditions for its repertoire; there are tunes from Ireland ("The Wind that Shakes the Barley"), Australia ("Gentle Annie," "The Cocky at Bungaree") and Peru ("Slow Dance from Machu Picchu") on this program, as well as two of Gordon Bok's most affecting originals-"Isle au Haut Lullabye" and the deeply moving title track. No song on this album is less than exquisite, and no performance is less than superb. A must for all lovers of traditional music. ~ Rick Anderson

| | Seaor Kasio I Love It EP CD (2007)
Voyager: Trinidad Parang Christmas Celebration CD music
$7.99 Señor Kasio’s edgy, party sound goes back to 2004 with the release of his first single, the insanely addictive "I Wanna F***" (I.W.F.). Released in the U.K. through Ark Records, "I Wanna F***" can be accurately summed up as a glorious three-minute hook of a pop song, and as a result of its sheer irresistibility, was featured in clubs across North America, Europe and Australia. Since then, over 50,000 fans have downloaded the track from Ark's interactive website. Steve Diguer has been making music and performing since 1998, when he formed "Brother Love Canal", Toronto's premier dance party band. Together they were active on Toronto's club scene for 6 years, picking up awards and critical acclaim from publications in North-America, Europe, and Australia, and performing at Toronto's largest concert venues.
| | Windham Hill Wedding Album CD (2003)
Voyager: Trinidad Parang Christmas Celebration music CDs
$6.89 Windham Hill's A Windham Hill Wedding Album presents contemporary and classic wedding ceremony music as performed by the label's roster of artists. Paul McCandless' "Arioso," James Galway's "Canon," and Will Ackerman's "Processional" are among the tracks that offer more traditional wedding music, while Jim Brickman's "If You Believe," George Winston's "Loreta and Desiree's Bouquet," and the Turtle Island String Quartet's "Nocturne From String Quartet No. 2" have a more modern feel. Fortunately, both the more classically and more new age-inspired tracks blend well together, thanks to the musicians' like-minded approaches. Other highlights include Steve Erquiaga's "Nocturne in E Minor, Op. 72 No. 1," Tim Story's "Gymnopedie No. 1," and Liz Story's "Wedding Rain." Overall, A Windham Hill Wedding Album is a polished, slightly eclectic collection of music that is pretty enough to enhance a wedding without distracting too much from the day's big moments. ~ Heather Phares
