Part Monster album
$14.29 This CD from one of the members of experimental rock band Tuxedomoon serves as a follow-up to the 1984 album NIGHT AIR, including tracks from albums recorded from 1989 to 1999.
Though seemingly a sequel to the original Night Air album, Night Air II is actually a compilation of a number of Blaine L. Reininger's works, instrumental as well as vocal, ranging from the late '80s through 2000, drawing on four separate releases. Mostly consisting of purely solo work through and through, though with the occasional guest performer, it's a fine showcase for his abilities at lush, often classically 'cinematic' work on the level of In the Nursery's series of real and imaginary film scores. Like that band, Reininger has won some specific movie commissions -- two of the source albums are soundtracks to films, 1995's Radio Moscow and 1997's Manic Man. Both provide some particularly striking choices on Night Air II -- the CD starts with Radio Moscow's "Night Ride," living up to the name by blending Reininger's accomplished violin work with what sounds like plucked harps and a high organ piece, along with other elements ...
| | War Of The Worlds CDs (1981) SACD Hybrid
Part Monster CD music
$24.05 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Original Soundtrack/Various Artists/Jeff Wayne: Jeff Wayne (piano, harpsichord); David Essex, Julie Covington, Phil Lynott, Richard Burton, Jo Partridge (vocals); George Fenton (tar); Chris Spedding, Justin Hayward, Chris Thompson, Gary Osborne, Herbie Flowers, Roy Jones, Ray Cooper , Paul Hart, Barry Morgan, Billy Lawrie, Paul Vigrass.
Released 40 years after Orson Welles' infamous radio version of the H.G. Wells tale, Jeff Wayne's musical version of War of the Worlds straddles old-style radio drama and contemporary orchestrated narratives by Rick Wakeman and David Bedford. And while it lacks the sophisticated arrangements of, say, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, it does boast an impressively odd cast -- this may be the only time that a member of Thin Lizzy worked with Richard Burton, and the presence of Julie Covington and the Moody Blues' Justin Hayward in very attractive singing roles attest to its pop/rock aspirations. It's Burton's sonorous tones that sustain this work; his frequent solo narrations are eminently listenable, whereas sections featuring dialogue with other characters often come off as a bit stilted. The music is competent studio rock, and "Horsell Common and the Heat Ray" does strike just the right balance between Burton's narration and an accompaniment built around a buzzsaw guitar riff. Overall, it's pleasant as a period piece, and still a fine way to introduce younger listeners to Wells' classic tale. (And if you can find it in a vinyl, it comes with a nicely produced narrative booklet with gloriously lurid illustrations by Geoff Taylor.) The album was actually appealing on too many fronts for its own good in many ways -- the Justin Hayward-sung ballad "Forever Autumn," extracted from a much longer piece on the double-LP -- showed some signs of appealing to AM radio listeners and climbed to the Top 40 based on airplay alone, but by the time Columbia Records in America (missing this boat entirely) got copies of the single into stores so that people could actually ...
| | Backstreet Boys Never Gone CD (2005) Bonus DVD; Bonus Tracks; Japan
Part Monster music CDs
$48.15 Japanese version includes three extra tracks ("Song For The Unloved", "Rush Over Me", and "Movin' On") plus a bonus DVD (NTSC format) with music clips and backstage band footage.
The Backstreet Boys were the primary sensation of the late-1990s boy-band craze, and their fourth record bears the title NEVER GONE. It is an almost defiant proclamation for a group that held five years of silence since its last release, but it is also a truly fitting title. While the musical winds had inevitably changed since 2000's BLACK & BLUE, there's always room for winsome, well-crafted pop and this fivesome still know how to effortlessly wrap their charming harmonies around a sweet pop concoction.
NEVER GONE opens on a majestic note with the subtly complex "Incomplete," an aching ballad with an imperial piano-and-strings backing that falls somewhere between Five For Fighting and Nickelback. From there the record presents compositions as attractive as the pastoral settings on the album's cover, which the Backstreet Boys instill with the same soft-burning passion for which they've become known. Whether on the driving pop of "Just Want You To Know," the throwback soul of "Weird World," the modern funk of "Poster Girl," or the earnest and reflective folk of "Safest Place to Hide," the Backstreet Boys have a keen ear for melody and the comfortable ease of singers who have played off each other for a decade. NEVER GONE ...

Part Monster CD music
$17.09 I was born in Mitchell, South Dakota - home of the World's Only Corn Palace. Oddly enough it was the same day as Judy Garland (if you really must know the date you can look it up). When my father re-enlisted in the Navy we started travelling... every 2-3 years someplace new: San Francisco Bay Area, Miami, Chicago, New Orleans, and San Diego, where I graduated from High School and attended San Diego State University. Although I've always had an interest in music, my major was Mathematics and Computer Science. It wasn't until I took a Music Appreciation class at San Diego State that my focus really started to change. I started going to jazz clubs in the Los Angeles area on weekends and it wasn't long afterwards that I made the decision to "Go For It!". I met many great jazz performers and started hanging around with them. It was the night of Leonard Feather's (Downbeat Magazine) birthday party at Dante's in North Hollywood that I met Dave MacKay, an incredible jazz pianist with the Don Ellis band. It took some convincing but he finally gave in and agreed to teach me, but not as a soloist - as an accompanist! He said it would pay off ...
