Bassist Rufus Reid (born 1944) is such a solid and versatile presence in jazz that it's easy to take him for granted. Reid's supple and understated tone has graced the recordings of singers Nancy Wilson, Chris Connor, and Marianne Faithfull, and of legendary instrumentalists Dexter Gordon, Kenny Burrell, and Stan Getz. He hasn't made many recordings as a leader, and that's part of the reason this CD/DVD live set is so noteworthy. The chief reason, however, is the vibrant yet mellow hard bop performed by Reid and the quintet of young contenders he put together for the date.
