With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. Hederos & Hellberg are a duo made up of a couple of well-connected musicians from Sweden. Martin Hederos is from the Soundtrack of Our Lives; Mattias Hellberg is from the Hellacopters/Diamond Dogs. On their debut record together Hederos plays piano and Hellberg sings. The eight songs they cover read like entries in a medium-level rock snob's diary: "Signed D.C." by Love, "She" by the Flying Burrito Brothers, "Been Smoking Too Long" by Nick Drake, "Guilty" by Randy Newman, "Heaven Stood Still" by Mink DeVille. Only Bob Dylan ("You're a Big Girl Now"), and maybe Tom Waits ("Soldier's Things"), could be considered household names. Sounding like the lounge act at a hip (though obviously so) cocktail lounge, Hellberg emotes his way through the tunes like a hoarse, slightly tipsy tourist, while Hederos tinkles along ponderously as if he were auditioning for the E Street Band. They totally wreck "Signed D.C." and make it sound like a public service advert, turn "Been Smoking Too Long" into a lead weight, and manage to make "Pale Blue Eyes" boring, which is a nasty trick. If this is the sound of hipsters growing old gracefully, then staying young is the far better option. Or, at the very least, growing old ungracefully and with a hint of originality. ~ Tim Sendra

They reach their thirties, calm down, let go of their youthful angst (some of it, anyway), and tell the media, "Hey, I'm not the same person at 30 (or 35) that I was at 19. I'm just not." But Jenni Rivera, at least ten albums into her career, shows no signs of letting go of her angst and anger on Parrandera, Rebelde y Atrevida -- and from a creative standpoint, that's probably for the best because angry is something that she does extremely well.
