| | Al Jarreau The Very Best of: an Excellent Adventure CD (2009) Remastered
Beat From Earth
$14.85 Vocalist Al Jarreau is one of the most successful singers in history. He has scored hits on Billboard's Jazz, R&B, Adult Contemporary, and Contemporary Jazz charts. He's won multiple Grammys and sold millions of records. Rhino has assembled 15 tracks that represent his long career with Warner Brothers and even cross-licensed a couple from Universal's GRP and Verve imprints. In addition to the 15 career-spanning cuts ranging roughly from 1975 to 1988 with a couple of tunes thrown in from the current decade, there is a new song entitled "Excellent Adventure," produced by the team of Amhir "?uestlove" Thompson and James Poyser, the same pair that produced Al Green's successful LAY IT DOWN. Fiona Frawley assembled this compilation ...

| | Donny Hathaway Collection CD (1990)
Beat From Earth
$8.75 Unfortunately, Atlantic's A Donny Hathaway Collection, one of the few career retrospectives available (and basically the only one in print), isn't quite definitive; it presents a version of Hathaway's career inordinately focused on his commercially successful duets with Roberta Flack, and his slowest, most dirge-like solo recordings. A few of his best up-tempo tracks are represented ("The Ghetto," his live cover of "What's Going On"), but not before haunted material like "I Love You More Than ...
| | Jon Balke Siwan CD (2009)
Beat From Earth
$14.65 An ambitious world fusion project, SIWAN brings together the Norwegian pianist Jon Balke, Moroccan singer Amina Alaoui, the Early Music ensemble Barokksolistene, minimalist trumpeter Jon Hassell, and others in a cross-cultural melange that imagines itself somewhere back in the medieval times of Andalusia, during the era when Spain was dominated by Muslim rule. With the expert help of Barokksolistene (Baroque solists), Balke has composed authentically evocative, Arabic-flavored settings for medieval Christian and Muslim poetic texts, fluently sung by Alaoui who sometimes resembles a serene flamenco singer or, better, a New Age descendant of the great Egyptian diva Oum Kalsoum. Hassell's horn is given ample solo space along with the Algerian violinist Eddine M'Kachiche; they both improvise against the expert zarb (Iranian hand drum) playing of Pedram Khavar ...

| | Arnett Cobb Arnett Blows For 1300 CD (1994)
Beat From Earth
$9.95 This Delmark CD reissues all 15 of Arnett Cobb's recordings for Apollo. The spirited tenor (who straddled the boundaries between swing and early R&B) is in prime early form with his sextet on a variety of basic material, much of it blues-oriented. Milt Larkin takes vocals on three of the tracks and there are short solos by either Booty Wood or Al King on trombone, but otherwise the main focus is on Cobb's tough tenor. This very accessible music is both danceable and full of exciting performances that were formerly rare. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Lissette Quartet Spinnler In Between CD (2005) Import
Beat From Earth
$13.25 American jazz enthusiasts should be thankful that many of the public school systems in Continental Western Europe have excellent foreign language programs. Although English isn't the primary language in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, or Denmark, many people growing up in those countries become totally fluent in English -- and that includes a lot of European jazz singers, who might live in a place where German or Dutch is the primary language but have no problem expressing themselves with English lyrics. Getting around in English isn't a problem for Swiss jazz vocalist Lisette Spinnler, who favors a very spiritual post-bop approach on her first album, In Between. Spinnler sings with a Swiss accent, but her accent isn't overwhelming; she's very understandable -- and if anything, her accent is a plus because it helps gives her performances character. There are many jazz CDs that can be described as "hard bop/post-bop" -- they are right on the hard bop/post-bop border and are relevant to both. But this 2003 date is very much of a post-bop mindset, and the type of ...
