Jodorowsky's high budget follow up effort takes his psychedelic allegorical mastery to another level. Grotesque, mystical, and sacrilegious, it is an excursion into the meaning of earthly wealth and immortality. Extras include deleted scenes with director commentary, original theatrical trailer, The Tarot short with director commentary, restoration process short, photo gallery/original script excerpts, and restoration credits. This 1973 film continues the strange and surreal tradition that cult director Alejandro Jodorowsky began in his FANDO Y LIS and EL TOPO. Marrying mysticism with religious imagery, THE HOLY MOUNTAIN centers on the Thief, a man who is messianic in both appearance and ideals. He meets the Alchemist (Jodorowsky), a man who wishes to rid people of all the trappings of modern living and take them on a spiritual quest. Like Jodorowsky's other work, the plot is secondary to the visuals, which are at once bizarre and beautiful. $17.89 With its combination of surreal imagery and assault on the ideals of the Western, EL TOPO may appear to be equal parts Luis Buñuel and Sam Peckinpah, but it's all Alejandro Jodorowsky. In addition to his directing duties, Jodorowsky contributes to the film's writing, music, editing, and ...

Holy Mountain video
$21.19 Special Edition CD includes the full album, a CD of instrumental mixes of the album and a CD of six cover songs.
Dream Theater's tenth long-player is about as dense and challenging as any album in the band's discography and emphasizes not only the virtuoso members' stupefying musicianship, but also their most aggressive and thoroughly metallic songwriting tendencies. The sixteen-minute opener "A Nightmare to Remember" quickly establishes this agenda via frequently thrash-paced staccato riffing, some of John Petrucci's most blistering ...
| | Ten Days That Shook The World DVD (1927)
Holy Mountain film
$20.85 One of the finest examples of intellectual montage, consisting of more than 3,200 shots in its 103 minutes, TEN DAYS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD has been described as a Constructivist poster come to life. Again working from a commission by Lenin, in this case, to make a film commemorating the 10th anniversary of the overthrow of the Kerensky government by the Bolsheviks, Sergei Eisenstein saw it as an opportunity to push his montage experiments to the limit. Focusing on the crucial events from February through ...

Holy Mountain review
$10.29 It is the late 1950s, but it might as well be the late 1850s in a small French town where everyone behaves as they should (supposedly), and attends church regularly. When a strong North wind blows through town, it brings the vivacious and mysterious Vianne (Juliette Binoche) and her young daughter Anouk (Victoire Thivisol). Vianne is soon the talk of the town: an unwed mother who declines to go to church and opens up a chocolate shop in the midst of Lent. Her good-natured, honorable personality and psychic ability (she can predict what kind of sweets best suit each person, and magically cures each of them of their particular maladies) make her as irresistible as her delectable treats. However, Vianne and her daughter are resented by the conservative mayor, the Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina), and by the pious Caroline (Carrie-Anne Moss), who has disowned her own spirited mother (Judi Dench, who plays Vianne's landlady), refusing the elderly woman access to her beloved grandson. This touching fairy tale, based on the novel by Joanne Harris, was filmed on location in rural France. An intelligent, ...

$15.05 Set in 1671 France under the decadent reign of Louis XIV, VATEL charts the events of a three-day feast in an impoverished western province. In an effort to impress the gilded king and then ask him for financial support, Prince de Condé (Julian Glover) invites Louis XIV (Julian Sands) to his country chateau for a weekend of courtly merriment. Gerard Depardieu stars as Vatel, the chef and entertainment planner, who must succeed in presenting the most lavishly organized occasion the king has ever witnessed. Vatel masterminds the sumptuous details of the weekend with gusto and charming bravura. The chateau of de Condé is transformed into a world of delights, enthralling the king, his court, and especially the king's favorite lady-in-waiting, Anne de Montausier (Uma Thurman). But when the kindly Vatel wins Anne's fancy, he is in danger of angering the opulent and lustful king and his villainous cohort Marquis de Lauzan (Tim Roth). Based on a true story, with a screenplay cowritten by Tom Stoppard and Jeanne LaBrune, this decadent ...
