A superior pop singer and songwriter, Judith Owen has been a major name in pop music since the late '90s. Happy This Way features a dozen of her songs, tunes that are generally wistful and sometimes playful. They stylistically hint at the Beatles and the 1960s in general, while remaining contemporary. Although her bio mentions her "pop, rock, jazz, classical, R&B, and theatrical influences," the music on Happy This Way mostly features pop and theatrical elements along with an orchestra that hints at classical in spots. Jamie Cullum's description of Judith Owen as "a female Randy Newman" fits quite well on this set, for one could easily imagine several of these songs appearing in films or even becoming unlikely standards. The offbeat yet often insightful lyrics, the lightly rhythmic interpretations, and the constant honesty make Happy This Way a CD that will be enjoyed by Judith Owen's many fans. ~ Scott Yanow

Jennifer Cutting isn't a huge name in the folk-rock world, but if Ocean: Songs for the Night Sea Journey is any indication, the Washington, DC-based songwriter, arranger and producer is well worth getting to know -- especially if one fancies folk-rock with a strong British Isles influence. Cutting, in fact, has so many British, Irish and Celtic influences that one could easily assume she has from that part of the world. But Cutting is definitely an American; she just happens to have a major appreciation of British, Irish and Celtic folk -- and that British Isles influence asserts itself quite strongly on original material like "The Gladdest Breeze," "Call of the Siren" and "My Grief on the Sea" (all of which underscore the tranquil, pastoral nature of her work). There are a few songs on this CD that aren't entirely original; "If You Are Near," for example, combines a classical aria by Johann Sebastian Bach with English words. But Cutting's own songs dominate this 2004 release, which demonstrates that she's a stellar writer able to coax superb performances out of the assembled group. Ray Russell has had quite the glittering career. Setting off at age 15 with the John Berry Seven, the guitarist went on to play with the Graham Bond Organisation and then Georgie Fame & the Blue Flames.
