| | Joshua Redman Trio Back East CD Joshua Redman Trio Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Following tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins's landmark albums WAY OUT WEST and FREEDOM SUITE, the sax-bass-drums trio context became de rigueur in jazz. With his brisk, hearty tone and very forward-looking approach, tenor ace Joshua Redman pays tribute to Sonny and comparable tenor triumphs (by Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz, etc.) with performances from three different trios. But BACK EAST is no exercise in nostalgia, as Redman realizes the best homage is to put a fresh, personal spin on lessons learned.

Down Beat (p.70) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Redman has always sought the most inspiring sparring partners. Here he has another superb interface with Joe Lovano on Wayne Shorter's 'Indian Song.'" JazzTimes (p.107) - "[T]here is confidence throughout as Redman creates a multitude of tonal colors on both tenor and soprano sax to mark and match the tempos set by his various collaborators." Back East
$14.65 Since making a middle-of-life comeback in the 1990s, saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Charles Lloyd has continually issued fascinating recordings. While some of them contain missteps, it's not for lack of ambition. For one of jazz's elder statesmen, Lloyd pushes his envelope of ideas about improvisation, rhythm and harmony, often to the breaking point. He is a player who sets sometimes impossibly high goals for himself, but in so doing, gives listeners something to really hold on to when encountering one of his albums or seeing him live. Jumping the Creek, which continues his association with ECM Records, is another compelling affair. The band -- pianist Geri Allen, bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Eric Harland -- is simply outstanding. Allen, particularly, hasn't shined on a record like this thus far this decade. Lloyd's compositional ideas here come from rhythmic phrases, ...

| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Back East
$12.89 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's ...

| | Mccoy Tyner Quartet CD (2007)
Back East
$13.49 McCoy Tyner's work with the John Coltrane Quartet is well documented, and this CD marks a welcome return to that format. Recorded live at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA, over New Year's, Joe Lovano does the honors in the tenor sax chair, while bassist Christian McBride and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts hold the rhythm section together with honor, passion, and drive. The world-class bassist and drummer, usually known for their overt showmanship and over the top chops, show remarkable restraint and sensitivity throughout. Tyner and friends play several of his original compositions, well-known and revered over the years. Lovano sounds, eerily enough, like Pharoah Sanders, employing a slightly staggered expansive vibrato on "Walk Spirit, Talk Spirit," while using a more haunting stance à la Coltrane for "Mellow Minor," a new modern mainstream tune. Sounding more like himself, Lovano and the group join a loping desert caravan for the beautiful "Sama Layuca," with Lovano playing the part originally written for flute. They rip through "Passion Dance" ...

| | Lillette Jenkins Music Of Lil Hardin Armstrong CD (1988)
Back East
$13.25 Lillette Jenkins is a little-known but reasonably talented pianist/vocalist who makes her debut as a leader on this CD. However, this set is much less about Jenkins as it is about Lil Hardin and her music. Chris Albertson's liner notes shed a great deal of light on Hardin's later life. 14 of Lil's songs are explored by four different groups on the well-conceived project, including such numbers as "Hotter Than That," "Struttin' With Some Barbeque," "Two Deuces," "Just for a Thrill," "Born to Swing" and "Brown Gal." Five songs are performed by an octet that includes trumpeter Glenn Zottola, trombonist Dan Barrett, Bob Wilber on clarinet and soprano, and Anti Sarpilla on clarinet and alto. Wilber has two features with the rhythm section. Jenkins is put in the spotlight with the trio, singing "Just for a Thrill" and romping on "Lil's ...
