| | Ari Hest Break-In CD Ari Hest Discography of CDs
The 2007 sophomore release by Bronx-based singer-songwriter Ari Hest improves significantly on the sound and songs of the artist's 2004 debut. The fare is still mainstream adult alternative--with catchy, guitar-led tunes and honest, emotional lyrics on familiar subjects--but there's an authority and a polish here that lifts THE BREAK-IN a cut above. Whether through the mild folk of opener "When and If," the delicate strains of "Leaving Her Alone" or the punchier "Right of Way," Hest proves he has the voice and songwriting chops to make his mark. $13.29 While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless ...
| | Greg Brown Milk Of The Moon CD (2002)
Break-In music CDs
$14.49 Singer-songwriter Greg Brown has made a cottage industry for himself in the folk world by doing it his way. His quirky, deeper-than-deep voice, homespun poetic narratives, and decidedly uncommercial bent have found their way into the hearts of many via the label he and cohort Bob Feldman started specifically to promote his music, and which has incidentally become a viable home for many other artists over the years. That independent spirit is all over MILK OF THE MOON, where Brown refuses to fall into genre traps. If a song resembles a traditional blues too closely, he'll distort his voice till it sounds like he's singing from Tom Waits's bathroom. If a pastoral sonic landscape is in danger of becoming too precious he'll slather it with some stinging, distorted guitar.
Despite such twists, Brown's strength has always been simplicity, and he adheres admirably to that principle here. Part ...
| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Break-In songs
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, ...
| | Los Super Seven Heard It On The X CD (2005)
Break-In album
$16.09 HEARD IT ON THE X is something of a tribute record (in spirit, at least) to the border radio stations of Mexico and Texas in the 1950s and '60s. These famed stations, whose broadcasts reached far into the United States, thanks to their 500,000-watt transmitters, played a mixture of mariachi, rock, blues, and country, ...

| | Rub N Tug Present Campfire CD (2005) (Import) Belgium
Break-In album
$15.89 A collection of 17 electronic tracks inspired by the New York party scene.
By the time Eskimo got around to releasing Rub 'n' Tug's Campfire, word had gotten out about the N.Y.C. duo's legendary loft parties, where mixing obscure disco with slow jams à la DJ Harvey was the norm and not the exception. Campfire, named after one of these parties, is a wonderful field recording/souvenir of what it's like to be there. A smattering of disco meets house meets unclassic edits is the order of the day here, played somewhat poorly. Mistakes are made; things are EQed and punished in a way that would make Ron Hardy wince and purists scoff in disapproval. But in many ways, this is the revival of a sound that was started way back in the days when loft parties were at their prime, when genres were blatantly disregarded, and when the only rules were to dance and to enjoy the music. Sometimes these experiments work, and sometimes they don't, but there are no apologies being made by ...

Break-In album
$13.39 Italian vocalist Laura Pausini became a worldwide sensation during the first 10 years of her recording career (although her success in America is minimal compared to Europe and Latin America). PRIMAVERA IN ANTICIPO, released in 2008 in both Italian and Spanish versions, extends Pausini's command over the adult contemporary form, offering up 14 tracks that play like foreign-language versions of Celine Dion or Phil Collins. ...
