It is apt that the soundtrack to BEAUTIFUL GIRLS, a film that follows several men as they attempt to understand their relationships with the women in their lives, consists entirely of songs by men, about the women they love. It takes a while to get to the cheery stuff, though; the first ray of optimism (King Floyd's 1970 funk-pop hit "Groove Me") is preceded by eleven songs documenting unrequited love, impassioned pleas, and love affairs doomed from the start.

Director Nicholaus Goossen's stoner comedy Grandma's Boy, starring and co-written by Adam Sandler protégé Allen Covert, provides the springboard for this "music from the motion picture" various-artists collection of rock and rap tracks. The publishing dates associated with the recordings all read 2004 or 2005 (with the exception of Aphex Twin's 1999 "Windowlicker"), but the listener may recheck the CD booklet now and then just to make sure, since the music, made by a bunch of developing acts and a couple of has-beens, so heavily recalls the popular styles of two decades earlier, or when the main character was in his infancy. The Twenty Twos' "Another Day," Bloc Party's "Helicopter," and the Futureheads' "Meantime" all sound like they could have originated in the post-punk ...

Difficult as it's become to find positive attributes for describing most of the bands that exploit the increasingly crowded creatively incestuous and predictable world of melodic metalcore, there are still those rare occasions when really good songs and just the slightest hint of imagination can shake the vice-like grip of stagnation. Such is the case with Portland, OR's It Prevails, who manage just the slightest bit of musical wiggle room via their songs' generally slower, mid-paced tempos, and not-so-heavy guitar attack, but generate far more significant aftershocks with the quality of their melodies and riffs.
