Discovered by Keiko Matsui, saxophonist Paul Taylor has proven to be a capable heir to the chilled-sax tradition of Dave Sanborn and Kirk Whalum. This time around, it's LADIES CHOICE, and Taylor has opted for a gregarious mix of smooth jazz and creamy R&B that's alternately mellow and danceable. Taylor's fluid, melodic approach meshes beautifully with the guest female voices of Regina Belle, Latoya London, Terry Dexter, and Lauren Evans.
Personnel: Paul Taylor (alto saxophone); Darryl Crooks, Darrell Crooks (guitar); Phil Hamilton (guitars); Lee Thornburg (flugelhorn); Rex Rideout (keyboards); Freddie "Ready Freddie" Washington , Reggie Hamilton, George Fontanette, Dwayne "Smitty" Smith (bass guitar); Michael White , Ricky Lawson (drums); Lenny Castro (percussion); Barry Eastmond (drum programming); Melodie Eastmond (background vocals).
Additional personnel: Terry Dexter (vocals); Latoya London, Lauren Evans, Regina Belle (background vocals).
JazzTimes (p.87) - "[A]nother collection of smooth grooves....Taylor opts for the deeper alto on the majority of tracks, both vocal and instrumental." Purchase Ladies' Choice CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Steve Cole Ny La CD (2003)
Ladies' Choice
$9.29 Burgeoning smooth jazz superstar Steve Cole continues to bridge the gap between pop-jazz and classic R&B on his third studio album, NY LA. Featuring strong melodic statements and truly funky keyboards via the likes of Brian Culbertson and Marquis "Hami" Dair, NY LA is a moody and solid affair. From the disco-influenced "Off Broadway," which harkens back to the best work of the Crusaders, to the Donald Byrd-esque "Interlude IV," tenor saxophonist Cole deftly crosses the boundary from jazz soloist to R&B heavyweight. More Grover Washington, Jr. than Kenny G., Cole manages to keep things organic and simple -- despite the use of programmed drum beats and synthesizers -- a lesson ...
| | Brian Culbertson It's On Tonight CD (2005)
Ladies' Choice
$11.99 With its seething, laid-back funk beats and steamy lyrics full of obvious references to romantic trysts, it doesn't get any sexier than Brian Culbertson's IT'S ON TONIGHT. A number of prominent crossover jazz artist lend their talents here. For example, the downtempo title track features a sensual R&B vocal from singer Will Downing. Later, saxophonist Boney James' mellifluous lines become the focus of "The Way You Feel." On "Secret Affair," relative newcomer Chris Botti plays Miles Davis-influenced riffs over a spacious one-chord vamp (and his use of a Harmon mute creates that ...
| | Peter White Playin Favorites CD (2006)
Ladies' Choice
$8.99 For his tenth full-length album, Playin' Favourites, British smooth jazz giant Peter White decided to, as the title suggests, turn to some of his favorite tracks from the '60s, '70s, and '80s, giving each of them his own interpretation (he did a similar thing in 1994's Reflections). Working with longtime producer Paul Brown, as well as musicians Boney James, Rick Braun, and Dave Camp, among others, White successfully turns the 11 songs on Playin' Favourites into instant crossover jazz hits. Mainly this means adding horns and keyboards to the background while the guitarist lithely moves around from the melody into lush improvisationally based solos, rendering them much slicker and smoother than they were before (although granted, he didn't have to do much to turn Bacharach's James Bond classic "The Look of Love" into something so adult contemporary). For many of the songs White chooses, the ...

Ladies' Choice
$11.25 Smooth jazz producer, arranger, and songwriter Paul Brown made the transition to recording artist with 2004's Up Front, which, like its successor, 2005's The City, was a Top Ten hit on the Contemporary Jazz chart. With a switch from GRP to Peak Records, Brown should continue ...
