The work of arranger-composer Bill Holman dates back to the 1950s, and that experience shows on HOMMAGE, a dazzling live outing released in 2007. Long known for his tasty, complex charts, Holman stays true to form on HOMMAGE by leading his outstanding big band through classic material like Woody Herman's "Woodchopper's Ball," Thelonious Monk's "Bemsha Swing," and Billy Strayhorn's "Raincheck," among others. The result is a hard-swinging recording that tips its hat to the past without ever sounding slavishly nostalgic.

| | Bill Holman Band Live CD (2005)
Hommage CD music
$13.45 Although Bill Holman is one of the all-time great arrangers and the leader of a stirring big band in the Los Angeles area, this was his first recording as a leader in seven years. Performed at a Maynard Ferguson tribute convention/festival put on by Ken Poston, the music played by the Bill Holman Orchestra is a little more boppish than usual for a Holman set, particularly the romping "Zoot 'n' Al," a tribute to Zoot Sims and Al Cohn. However, Holman's arrangements are quite complex, full of surprises and full of excitement. Whether it be a major reworking of the Beatles' "A Day in the Life" and Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee," or such originals as "Woodrow" (for Woody Herman) and "The Bebop Love Song," the music is full of surprising twists and turns. The solos are uniformly excellent from the impressive crew of Los Angeles-area players, but it is the Holman arrangements that are most unique. Highly recommended to fans of modern jazz big bands. ~ Scott Yanow
Grammy Award winning Arranger and Band Leader Bill Holman brings us his jazz big band recorded live in 2004. Bill Holman introduces many new and exciting compositions and arrangements with his star packed LA based jazz big band. The Bill Holman Band is considered one of the greatest working big bands in jazz today:"This is the first album since 1997 by The Bill Holman Band. | | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Hommage music CDs
$13.75 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release tunefulness, creating rhythmic and harmonic intricacies that seem to spur Coltrane's saxophone exploration to new heights.
The quartet shines on ballads ("Sweet and ...
| | Phil Woods American Songbook CD (2006)
Hommage songs
$14.39 Phil Woods, the great American saxophonist, has been featured in more diverse settings than almost anyone in the history of the music. His constant challenging of himself as a player, bandleader, and composer has been admirable since his debut set as a leader. While standards sets these days are not only a dime a dozen but mostly cop-outs from established artists and newcomers who either lost or never had the chops to execute them with any aesthetic imprint, let alone the one they deserve, septuagenarian Woods breathes life into ten of these tunes, and reinvents them both as harmonic structures and as tools for swing. With trumpeter Brian Lynch, pianist Bill Charlap (a fine leader in his own right), bassist Steve Gilmore, and Billy Goodwin on drums, Woods takes on "Foggy Day" as if it were a new tune. The same goes for the age-old jazz ballad of choice "All the Things You Are," on which Charlap sets the course for a wondrous take with the ensemble playing together as if they co-wrote the tune. Lynch's muted trumpet is a natural choice, but Charlap's extrapolation on the chord voicings and Woods playing the middle-low register of his horn and easing out with a sense of phrasing akin to Paul Desmond's. The front-line interplay on "I've Got You Under My Skin," is simply gorgeous, especially when Woods takes his second solo break and Lynch slips back in behind the beat. One can hear the entire history of the alto as a solo instrument in this tune. And if you are about to groan at seeing the ...
| | Bob Florence Eternal Licks And Grooves CD (2007)
Hommage album
$13.15 Although there weren't many big bands on the jazz scene in the 2000s, being a big band leader, composer, and arranger is no retro exercise for Bob Florence. A veteran whose experience dates back to the 1950s, Florence knows how to work a large ensemble, and 2007's ETERNAL LICKS AND GROOVES is a testament to his mastery. In re-arranging well known tunes and musical motifs by Count Basie, Claude Debussy, and Kern and Mercer, Florence demonstrates his ability to use the textures, dynamics, and ...
| | Carl Saunders Lost Bill Holman Charts CD (2007)
Hommage CD music
$13.05 In the early '80s, saxophonist Ted Richardson, a geologist by day, commissioned Bill Holman to write material for a septet album. After all of the ten arrangements were written, the project never took place and the charts sat in a closet for 20 years. Carl Saunders, lead trumpeter with Holman for many years and a brilliant soloist, unearthed the arrangements, and on this 2007 CD the music was finally recorded. Since Holman is one of the most brilliant arrangers in jazz history, the wait was worth it. While there are many fine solos along the way by Saunders (whose lines on the trumpet seem both effortless and endless), tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb (showcased on "Dearly Beloved"), trombonist Andy Martin, pianist Christian Jacob, and guest Sam Most (on flute and baritone), it is the written ensembles that are most adventurous and memorable. Whether deconstructing and reinventing five standards, introducing five pieces of ...

Hommage songs
$15.29 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Guitarist/vocalist John Pizzarelli returns with another solid collection of tastefully swinging standards on Knowing You. Never straying too far from what he does best, Pizzarelli is nonetheless an exciting improviser and pleasing vocalist who always finds a way to make an old chestnut of a tune his own. Here, his rapport with such longtime bandmates as pianist Ray Kennedy, bassist Martin Pizzarelli, and drummer Tony Tedesco is instinctual, full of humor, and filled with call-and-response interplay. To these ends, Pizzarelli has compiled an enjoyable set of well- and lesser-known standards, including the sprightly swinger "Coffee, Black," ...

| | American Metal - The Steeler Anthology CD (2006)
Hommage CD music
$13.69 Steeler is best known as the band that brought Swedish guitar shredding sensation Yngwie Malmsteen to the U. S. of A., and to a lesser extent, as one of singer Ron Keel's first outfits. However, Malmsteen was only briefly a member of the group, while Keel was present from the beginning (1981) to the end (1984), as evidenced by selections on the 2006 compilation American Metal: The Steeler Anthology. The group only managed to issue a lone full-length studio effort during its brief tenure together, 1983's Steeler (which ...
