| | Brad Leali Maria Juanez CD Brad Leali Discography of CDs
Brad Leali's second TCB CD (and third as a leader) is an impressive outing, very much in the tradition of Dizzy Gillespie's best Afro-Cuban jazz big bands, though the alto saxophonist has very much found his own voice. The leader's "Special K" proves to be a potent opener, though Jon Faddis' solo is strangely mixed in the background rather than being prominent like Leali's sizzling alto. His title track begins with a narrative argument between him and a female who is evidently departing, which gets a bit tiresome but fades as a swinging samba brings in the full band. The great Frank Foster arranged Leali's "Priority Soul," a slinky soul-jazz number, while Claus Raible revives the late Lee Morgan's overlooked hard bop gem "Seconds Best" with a percolating chart. Tommy James' inventive scoring of "The Pink Panther" is a bit darker than in its typical settings but swings like mad, driven by the superb brass and reed ensemble work. This is a fun session and it should be of great interest to fans of Latin jazz and bop. ~ Ken Dryden

$14.29 Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band: Grant Geissman (guitar); Eric Marienthal (flute, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); Brian Scanlon (clarinet, tenor saxophone); Gordon Goodwin (tenor saxophone, piano); Dan Savant, Wayne Bergeron, Bob Summers (trumpet); Andy Martin, Alexander Iles, Craig Ware (trombone); Rick Shaw (upright bass, bass guitar); Ray Brinker, Bernie Dresel (drums); Luis Conte (percussion).
Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band proves that large jazz ensembles are still in demand with this mostly rewarding effort. Goodwin, who wrote most of the music and doubles on piano and tenor sax, makes the most of his group's abilities. Highlights include the modern swing chart "Count Bubba's Revenge," the playful "Hunting Wabbits (A Bad Hare Day)" featuring ...
| | Chris Walden Big Band No Bounds CD (2006)
Maria Juanez CD music
$12.79 The follow-up to a particularly successful debut album, No Bounds brings more of what could potentially be referred to as "contemporary" big band. Big band as a major force disappeared decades ago, and those playing now are almost entirely nostalgia-based groups playing the old standards. Chris Walden is one of a very few that has adapted the genre to fit some more contemporary ideas, and takes new directions with the large-scale format. Here, there's a mix of old and new pieces, some updated thoroughly, some hearkening back to the powerful ensembles of the '70s, and some arranged back toward a vocal standard form (with Tierney Sutton providing some nice vocal work). The album opens with a jazz version of David Foster's theme for the 2006 Winter Olympics, ...

Maria Juanez album
$13.25 At the time this recording was made in the spring of 2006, the DePaul University Jazz Ensemble was one of the top college jazz bands. With tight ensembles and inspired solos by its members, the big band is heard live at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago, directed by veteran educator Bob Lark, who is also a fine trumpeter and flugelhornist. The band backs veteran alto saxophonist Phil Woods on the first seven selections, a musician who knows a potent group when he hears it. Woods is obviously very familiar with ...

$12.59 Anytime a label like Madacy releases something titled Essential, it is almost like a signal to put the clamps on your wallet, because there is bound to be something not quite right going on, something that would make any transaction that might take place a ripoff. Lynyrd Skynyrd's Essential is no exception. The first disc, which has "Free Bird," "Sweet Home Alabama," and "You Got That Right," is made up of 1997 live recordings. It was originally released by BMG Special Products in 1998 as Extended Versions. Disc two is also a reissue of a budget comp, in this case the 1997 MCA Special ...
