$9.29 A rougher version of George Roy Hill's pet theme of men as overaged adolescents, SLAP SHOT stars Paul Newman as Reggie Dunlop, the venerable player-coach of the Charlestown Chiefs, a fifth-rate minor league hockey team. When their blue-collar town falls prey to Rust Belt ills of the 1970s, attendance drops, and the greedy owner starts looking for a buyer, anxious to cash out. Dunlop is informed that the players need to crank up the box office to keep their jobs in what will likely be their last season. To the coach's dismay, general manager Joe McGrath (Strother Martin) imports the Hanson brothers, a hockey Three Stooges who like to assault soda machines and play with toys. But once Dunlop turns them loose, they're a Panzer division on ice, and the team starts winning by adopting their bone-crushing style. Although the team is on the upswing, Dunlop's wife, Francine (Jennifer Warren), seems to be through with him, and the isolated wives of the other players aren't much happier with their fate. This sidesplitting, profanity saturated film is one of the funniest ever made about any sport. While writer Nancy Dowd intended to probe darker issues--such as the greed of ownership, the blood lust of fans, and the childishness of the players--Hill submerges them in raucous laughter. Newman is near ...

$9.75 Lucio Fulci's trademark gore is applied to a new genre, and strange dabbling in fantasy is a rambling, eccentric sword-and-sorcery extravaganza. The demon sorceress Ocron has shadowed the sun with the strength of her will, and the once peaceful Land of Cronos lies in darkness. Only two warriors, Ilias (Andrea Occhipinti) and Maxz (Jorge Rivero), can save the world from her evil sorcery. Fulci is joined by the equally ...

Fantastic Four - A House Divided review
$18.29 Aaron Webber makes an outstanding feature-film debut in WHOLE NEW THING as 13-year-old Emerson, a precocious homeschooled boy who spends most of his time, when not alone in his room, with his very liberal parents and his parents' friends. He takes naked saunas and smokes dope with his mother, Kaya (Rebecca Jenkins), and father, Rog (Robert Joy), and gives erotic back rubs to their female friends. But Kaya, who needs a change in her life, believes it must start with Emerson going to the local public school and meeting some kids his own age. It also involves her getting involved with Denny (Callum Keith Rennie) because of Rog's growing bitterness about his failing career. Despite his protestations, Emerson goes off to school, and after his initial displeasure with the whole new experience, thinking he is above it all, he soon develops a crush on his teacher, Don Grant (cowriter Daniel MacIvor). Don, meanwhile, likes to spend his free time having anonymous sex with strange men in public rest-stop bathrooms.
Beautifully shot on location in Nova Scotia by Christopher Ball, and expertly directed and cowritten by Amnon Buchbinder, WHOLE NEW THING, a film-festival favorite shot in a ...

$14.45 After learning to play guitar and sing during a stint in the Big House, a minor-league punk kid becomes a rock star, with a little help from a beautiful agent. But the pressures of fame wear him down. Considered by many to be Elvis Presley's best film because of its eerie narrative prescience, noirish setting, and quality songs, especially the poolside performance of "You're So Square."
