Oi! album
$15.05 When Jonas Bering followed up Bienfait a few months after release with the Emballages 12", it was apparent that the Frenchman was beginning to develop a thicker, fuller, more dance-oriented sound -- a sound that was also beginning to shed the inspirations that were previously perceptible to a fault. This progression continued up to the release of Sketches for the Next Season; another pair of Kompakt twelves -- including Normandie, one of the label's best of 2003 -- along with an excellent release for Logarythm (as En:no) and a contribution to Sentrall's Drive the Five series ("Down to Big Sur," a shuffle-tech track on par with the best Schaffelfieber entries) all paved the way. With the exception of "Normandie 1," Sketches for the Next Season is made up from all-new material, and though its formatting lends itself to home listening, it's a lot more likely to induce bodily movements than Bienfait. Once upon ...
| | Kaito Hundred Million Love Years CD (2006) (Import) Germany
Oi! CD music
$15.15 After the charm of Kaito's first disc won over the hearts of trance music naysayers and won favor with the hard-hearted ambient purists via the beatless version of the album, Kompakt began a mild onslaught of releases exploring the melodic, epic side of techno that bordered on progressive house/trance. Many of these records infused the spirit and romanticism of early Detroit releases with the dramatic arrangements of European electronic music from the early '90s. And while a few hit the mark dead on, there were others that never really captured the formula quite ...

| | Chris Beard Live Wire CD (2005)
Oi! songs
$12.65 You could say that Chris Beard likes to play guitar -- the nine minutes of fretboard pyrotechnics that make up the opening "Born to Play the Blues" make that all too apparent. This is a full-on electric blues (mostly) live disc, full of scintillating lead guitar (check out the inspired "Tribute to Luther Allison"), backed by a top-notch band, whose players also get a good workout, like ...

| | Jethro Tull Little Light Music CD (1992) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
Oi! CD music
$10.49 This generous 17-song set is culled from live performances from all over the world: Athens, Berlin, Jerusalem and Munich, to name a few. Despite a few intense electric moments ("Locomotive Breath," "A New Day Yesterday") this is very much in the "unplugged" tradition, meaning many of the formerly electric rock numbers are recast in gentler settings, featuring spare, acoustic accompaniment. The approach is perfectly suited to the songs of Jethro Tull and Ian Anderson's image as the rustic troubadour.
The collection provides a thorough retrospective of the group's career, from the blues-rock that marked its earliest incarnation (""The Sun Won't Shine For You") to classic hit singles like "Living in the Past," which has been reworked into a purely instrumental version. Anderson revisits some of the cream of his later records on songs like "Pussy Willow" and the instrumental "Under Wraps." Highlights also include the gentle "Bouree," a longtime concert staple based on a Bach theme, which remains utterly charming. The group stretches out on a spirited, reggae-tinged rendition of the traditional "John Barleycorn," which was made popular by Traffic in the mid-'70s.
2006 issued digitally remastered edition of the Tull album recorded ...
