As part of the unique music marketing aesthetic in the mid-2000s, music fans could literally walk into Starbucks and buy CDs from their favorite hip adult-oriented artists. This melodic, energetic, and crisply produced debut by the powerful harmonic rock trio Until June -- consisting of Phoenix-bred brothers Josh Ballard (piano and vocals) and Dan Ballard (guitar) and drummer Daniel Dempsey -- wasn't available there, but the coffee giant played a big part in their discovery. L.A. was still the place where rock dreams came true for starving musicians, and Josh was serving coffee at a local Starbucks when famed engineer and producer Brian Garcia (Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, Our Lady Peace) told him he "looked like a musician." Garcia loved Until June's demo tape, ultimately produced their debut, and the rest fits into the decade's mainstream rock story that launched other great bands like Keane, Coldplay, the Fray, etc. As a side note, Until June may also be the only band in history named after its collective "make it or break it" deadline -- had they not been signed in June 2006, they might have packed it in. The powerful "oo-ah-hoo-hoo" wordless vocal hook that swirls around Josh Ballard's passionate, Kevin Cronin-like vocals on the impossibly hooky opener, "Sleepless," made pop fans glad that this didn't happen. The sensual midtempo rocker "What I've Done" has more exciting harmonic vocal texturing behind Josh's lead vocal, which ranges into a striking falsetto to emphasize certain emotions. While most of the tracks ("The Saddest Song," "All I Have," "Don't Walk Away") start with a driving foundation that vibes from Until June's obvious Coldplay and Fray inspirations, Josh's soaring high tones (which often match the range of his brother's upper-register guitar lines) take his band's straightforward romantic lyrics to a whole new emotional level. The Ballard boys are also slightly keen on atmospheric heartbreakers like "Unnoticed" and "Outer Space," songs whose youthful innocence would charm some folks while striking others as deliciously corny (but since when was that a negative in pop music?). The band's impressive debut also features a highly atmospheric, simply produced, and sincere spiritual reflection tune ("You Do") that would be comfortable in the CCM format. At just over half an hour, though, it feels like the party's just getting started when it ends. ~ Jonathan Widran

Until June CD music
$18.95 This solid, easy-to-listen-to, and high-spirited instrumental saxophone CD was released by the artist himself; the fact that it's nearly as good as any sax album put out in 2001 by a major label is proof that smooth jazz sax is a crowded field. But Andrew Neu deserves a chance, if this impressive debut is any indication of what he can achieve. The bluesy, brassy, alto-driven kick-off tune "Shadow Dancing" is dreamy, funky, and retro all at the same time, and features the type of horn doubling that's been popular with Steve Cole and Ed Calle. "A Little Minor Groove" is a bit bluesy and retro too, a strong soprano tune that has subtle horn section inflections; no reason this couldn't be a genre radio hit as well. The doubling effect works even better on the gospel-flavored title track, and "Midnight Buffet" is the most clever name for a festive tropical tune in quite some time; after all, some of the best action on a cruise takes place at that time, and the balmy breezes are still blowing. Neu even has the requisite soulful vocal track (by Yvette Miles) and the modern R&B standard "I Live for Your Love." No fan of Memphis soul will be able to resist "Warts," a strangely titled but irresistible horn band song. ~ Jonathan Widran
An active part of the Philadelphia music scene, ANDREW NEU is in constant demand as a reed player, arranger, composer and recording artist. He has performed and toured with The Four Tops, The Temptations, Sister Sledge, Mel Torme, Rosemary Clooney, Englebert Humperdink, Debbie Boone, Steve ...

| | Jeff Busch Song For The 9th Ward CD (2007)
Until June songs
$16.45 ‘Song for the 9th Ward’ is the 2nd album of original jazz, by drummer/bandleader Jeff Busch. The tunes were written for the play ‘Katrina: I too am worthy’, by Seattle play write, Donte Felder. The music, and script are based on the stories of Hurricane Katrina victims, and the sound of this quintet still conjures memories of the hard bop era. Busch’s writing continues to have a strong Afro 6/8 rhythmic presence, but he also draws upon the brilliant Cuban piano skills of Julio Jauregui, on tunes such as ‘Flamenco’, and upon the spontaneous ‘free playing’ of horn men Brian Kent and Tony Grasso on a piece called, ‘The Struggle’. Bassist Evan Flory Barnes always seems at home no matter what the style, and his bowed solo on ‘Lament’ adds an emotional texture to this album’s range of sounds. Busch’s writing is influenced from many years of work in both the traditional jazz and Latin jazz scenes. As he says, "Afro 6/8 rhythms and swing are like brothers...from the same mother, just variations on the same rhythmic theme". While this influence remains at the core of his writing, his band continues to play with a fresh, soulful, sound, that is open & honest, optimistic, and always musical. Based in Seattle, Washington, the Jeff Busch Quintet is an outstanding young band that draws on the talents of a unique blend of players. Busch, a first call percussionist in the Brazilian jazz community and a member of the Jovino Santos Neto Quinteto, nominated for a Latin Jazz Grammy in 2004, is also an extremely versatile drummer. His work outside of the Brazilian music scene has included drumming for legendary Gospel singer Patrinell Wright and the Total Experience Choir, Gospel singer Edna Baptiste, jazz pianist Chris Blacker, Costa Rican singer Carlos Cascante and his group Tumbao, and Cuban dance band Mango Son to name a few. His music is deeply rooted in the connectedness between West African drumming and swing. “Everything you hear in contemporary jazz, latin music, and even hip hop can be traced right back to West African drum beats…it’s the ...
