Repercussions Of A Badly Planned Suicide
$21.94 When Anthrax released AMONG THE LIVING in 1987, the band was a part of a then-burgeoning heavy metal sub-genre called speed or thrash metal. This was an inversion of glam metal. The band members wore worn-out jeans and T-shirts, their long hair was hairspray-free, and not a smudge of make-up was applied to their unsightly mugs. Their music was dense, borrowing speed from punk and hardcore and mammoth guitar riffing from metal, and featured thought-provoking lyrics. AMONG THE LIVING not only served as Anthrax's commercial breakthrough, but (along with seminal releases by Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer) the album brought this new musical form to the forefront.
The members of Anthrax were a bunch of comic-book-reading, jam-wearing heavy metal fans from NYC, and the music reflects the lifestyle. The band based it's U.K. Top-30 hit single "I Am the Law" on a favorite ...

Repercussions Of A Badly Planned Suicide
$11.49 One had to wonder what Pelican's signing to Southern Lord could possibly mean. To be truthful, while the band did write and perform more structurally formal material on 2007's CITY OF ECHOES, they retained their trademark post-metal aesthetic -- percussive repetition, overtone basslines, and nuanced guitar riffing. On WHAT ...

| | Kiss Unmasked CD (1980)
Repercussions Of A Badly Planned Suicide
$6.49 Released in 1980, UNMASKED is the first album by Kiss not featuring the four original members. Although featured on the album cover, drummer Peter Criss was replaced by session man and David Letterman band member Anton Fig. With disco all but dead and new wave setting in, the group took a pop approach with producer Vini Poncia at the helm. While the record may have alienated hard core fans that were used to the band's heavier sound, the record did manage to appeal to Kiss' ever growing kiddie base.
The band's lyrical content remained consistent though, as "Is That You?" describes a vixen-like character close to the group. "Shandi", the only single off the record, is a catchy pop ballad featuring Paul Stanley on lead vocals. Lead guitarist Ace Frehley contributes vocally to 2 tracks: "Talk To Me" and "Torpedo Girl", increasing his input in the group compared to previous years. While UNMASKED may not be Kiss's ...
| | Terry Gibbs Dream Band, Vol. 5: The Big Cat CD (1961)
Repercussions Of A Badly Planned Suicide
$12.35 Taken from the same live sessions as Vol. 4 (and last out several decades ago on Mercury) this fifth release by vibraphonist Terry Gibbs' "Dream Band" has plenty of swinging numbers from the 17-piece big band. Mostly comprised of West Coast jazz all-stars (including Richie Kamuca and Bill Perkins on tenors, trumpeter Conte Candoli, trombonist Frank Rosolino and drummer Mel Lewis), the orchestra is in top form on such numbers as "Tico Tico," "Billie's Bounce," "Jump the Blues Away" and a few obscure oriignals. The inventive arrangements by Bill Holman, Manny Albam and Al Cohn insured that Terry Gibbs' Dream Band would have its own sound and the fifth volume may very well be its finest. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Slayer Reign In Blood CD (1986)
Repercussions Of A Badly Planned Suicide
$10.49 Slayer's major-label debut remains one of the most brutal metal albums ever recorded, uncompromising in its extremes; ironically, it's their mainstream breakthrough release. Infusing its thrash sound with a hardcore-punk influence, the cacophonous quartet shifts from supernatural terror to real-life horrors with shorter songs such as "Necrophobic" and "Postmortem". The change is most notable on the gruesome depiction of Nazi butcher Josef Mengele on the frenzied epic "Angel of Death". Only the apocalyptic closing number, "Raining Blood," hearkens back to the semi-melodic Slayer style from SHOW NO MERCY and HELL AWAITS.
Throughout its short running time (28 minutes, an EP even by 1980s standards), the Rick Rubin-produced REIGN IN BLOOD unleashes a malevolent maelstrom of sound. Propelled by Dave Lombardo's pummeling percussion, Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King let loose their roaring guitars, often trading leads in their unorthodox, wailing style, while bassist Tom Araya barks and shrieks the lyrics with maniacal glee. Slayer is one of the few metal bands that genuinely ...
