An evocative new project where Sufi influenced music of North Africa joins with funk and jazz. Byron was nominated for both 'Best Band' and 'Best Album' at the BBC jazz awards 2007 and MOBO Category 'Best Jazz Act' for this album. `Meeting Ground' is the musical manifestation of a place where the spirit and soul of a people join together to celebrate life. The music follows the history of the Gnawa, a Sufi brotherhood from Morocco. It has a traditional singing quality to it, providing an experience that is both enchanting and vibrantly uplifting. Highlights of the album are `Exaltation', a duet between Byron on trumpet and Boujemma Bouboul on voice and guimbri (a three stringed bass lute); `Zawiya' sees the complete integration of jazz and traditional Gnawa rhythms; and `Sailor of the Sands' chronicles the sub-Saharan routes to Hip Hop. Personnel: Byron Wallen - (trumpet, shells, samples, percussion), Boujemaa Bouboul - (vocals, guimbri, percussion), Tony Kofi - baritone and soprano saxophone), Larry Bartley - (bass), Tom Skinner - (drums). Byron Wallen is one of the most innovative, exciting and original trumpet players alive. `Meeting Ground' is his first release in five years and represents a significant landmark in his kaleidoscopic career. It follows his prize winning Indigo album which received the 2002 BBC Innovation Award. 'The exchange of ideas and sounds makes for a subtle and unusual world-jazz collaboration. ' (John L Walters - The Guardian)Here is a review from a customer who bought the album. 'If you enjoyed the Indigo album this is of a similar ilk, but dare I say a little richer in some quarters. The fundamental quality behind the Indigo album was the way in which it grows and grows like tree roots, becoming ever increasingly deeper the more they are exposed to the sunlight of your eyes. Meeting Ground is no different here. Meeting Ground has the additional quality of African musicians contributing to the original quartet. The voice of Boujemma Bouboul grabs hold of a part of Africa and brings it to the listeners' ears and minds. Wallen's ability to create truly deep music is established beyond doubt on this album. It reflects the variety he displays in his trumpeting and his use of other horns as well as shells. I was lucky enough to catch them play live so I know these aren't the result of just studio trickery. Wallen is a very gifted composer and trumpeter and what I like about this album is how he has fused African music and Jazz and managed to do so with incredible sincerity.' | | U2 No Line On The Horizon CD (2009)
Meeting Ground songs
$10.49 There's no shortage of legendary producers in line to work with music world titans U2; when work with Rick Rubin broke off, Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois stepped in. The resulting NO LINE ON THE HORIZON, 2009's offering from the Irish rockers, continues in the grand U2 tradition, as soaring pop anthems like opening single "Get on Your Boots" pair with experimental melanges like "Tripoli," on a striking album featuring touches of all the albums come before, yet hinting at new worlds for Bono to conquer.
After spending the 1990s experimenting with electronic music and returning to arena-ready rock during the first few years of the 21st century, U2 stakes out territory somewhere between those two points on 2009's NO LINE ON THE HORIZON. Enlisting its go-to production trio of Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Steve Lillywhite, the Irish quartet seems intent on crafting a quirkier companion piece to HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB, ...

Meeting Ground CD music
$6.09 This 1998 reissue contains 5 bonus tracks (including the previously
unreleased "White Christmas") not included on the original release.
John Denver's music always had a warm, home-spun quality to it, so it isn't surprising that his 1975 holiday effort, Rocky Mountain Christmas, is a wonderfully low-key and friendly Christmas album. Divided between classic carols and new numbers, such as the fine "Aspenglow" and "Christmas for Cowboys," the album is an appealing, pretty record, perfect for late nights by the fireside. The 1998 CD reissue adds five bonus tracks: "Jingle Bells," "White Christmas," "The Music is You," "Perhaps ...
| | Naked Raygun Understand? CD (1989)
Meeting Ground music CDs
$12.19 The most striking aspect of Quarterstick's reissue of Understand? is the two bonus tracks that come at the end of the album. Recorded live at Chicago 's Riviera Theater in November 1987, the spirited performances of "Mr. Gridlock" and "I Don't Know" blast through the speakers with an ardent fury that all of the tracks on Understand? so desperately lack. In a word, the live material cuts to the heart of what plagues Understand?, a record that is dull, idle, and plain boring when measured against the albums that precede it. Missing from most tracks are the witty lyrics, guttural attack, and edgy melodies that make Naked Raygun's Throb Throb, All Rise, and Jettison must-have records. Instead of driving the music, or lending structural tension and opposition, the guitars on Understand? act like a sinker and weight the songs down. Jeff Pezzati's vocals aren't as cutting or cunning as they could be, and occasionally ("Wonder Beer," for example), are artificial and laughable. While there ...

Meeting Ground music CDs
$19.99 Raven's 2007 release Less Than the Song/Life Machine is a straight-up two-fer of Hoyt Axton's first two albums for A&M Records, containing no bonus tracks. Although they were released just a year apart -- Less Than the Song came out in 1973, Life Machine in 1974 -- they're very different records, with the former being a spare, rather haunting slice of singer/songwriter introspection and the latter being a good-time boogie record, highlighted by Axton's big breakthrough hit, "Boney Fingers." Despite their differences in tone, they make for good companion pieces, not just because they date from the same era but, when taken together, they give a fairly good indication of the scope of Axton's talents as a songwriter and a performer (his re-workings of "Maybelline" and "That's All Right" on Life Machine are inventive and fun). This is a good disc but be forewarned: if you already own the 1998 two-disc compilation The A&M Years you already have this material -- in the same running order, no less (both discs, after all, merely feature the two albums paired up as a two-fer) -- as the entire first disc of that set. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
