| | David Friesen Live At The Jazz Bakery CD (1999)
Jazz Anecdotes
$9.55 Duets in an intimate setting can frequently bring out the best of performers sans drummer. Pianist Zeitlin and bassist Friesen dish out the introspection and interplay in spades, sowing crops from years of jazz fertilization to offer this lengthy program done over two evenings at the Jazz Bakery in L.A. While they all too infrequently appear on recordings as leaders, together here they make memorable music in a special setting and format, quite an event for fans of these two veterans. Starting off with John Coltrane's always evergreen "Equinox," Zeitlin takes charge with his sometimes ruminating, tinkling, chiming, or cascading lines while Friesen's strummed chordal notions give the piece motion. It's clear they share musical values, and the total sound is heightened by their innate abilities to listen and respond, abilities reflected in the response of their enthusuastic audience after every piece. "Nefertiti" is taken at an unusual triple-time pace, settling to easy 4/4 swing on Friesen's clear-as-a-bell bass solo. You'd expect a great deal of ornate serenity from these two, and you get it during Friesen's "Other Times, Other Places," but not in the restless Zeitlin's 17-minute "Tryptych," during which he goes into rambling, rippling chords, a quite animated solo mid-flight, and unison bass-left hand piano lines. This is not so much exploratory as it is long-winded, playful, and zen-like. A fairly urgent "Epiphany" of the pianist's penning for what seems a brief six minutes merges to the easily swung, poignant yet airy standard "The Touch of Your Lips" expounded upon gloriously by Zeitlin and replete with echoes of "It Might as Well Be Spring." "Upon ...

| | Illinois Jacquet Flying Home: The Best Of The Verve Years CD (1994)
Jazz Anecdotes
$12.35 Tenor saxophonist Illinois Jacquet recorded some of his finest early work on Verve in the 1950s, and a sampling of those recordings is presented on this 20-track set. Named after Jacquet's signature swing-boogie tune "Flying Home" (which appears as the last track here), THE BEST OF THE VERVE YEARS features the artist primarily in big-band settings.
Jacquet has a fat tone and an impressive technical range. He also plays with lots of guts, pushing his horn through a variety of approaches from lyrical to aggressive. His conception seems to incorporate swing, blues, bebop, and proto-R&B all at once, and this distinguishing hallmark of his style is evident even on these early sides. Fun, vibrant, and full of life, Jacquet's performances here are bound to please fans or anyone interested in the mainstream jazz of the period.
Principally recorded at Fine Sound Studios, New York and Radio Recorders, Los Angeles, California between 1951 and 1958. Includes liner notes by Brian Priestley.
This is part of Verve's ...

| | Voices From The FIFA World Cup CD (2006)
Jazz Anecdotes
$7.69 Because no sporting event is complete until it has a soundtrack, Voices from the FIFA World Cup was released just before the start of the 2006 tournament. Containing three official World Cup cuts (The Official Song, "The Time of Our Lives," by Il Divo and Toni Braxton, the 2006 FIFA World Cup Mix of "Hips Don't Lie/Bamboo," by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean, and The Anthem, "Celebrate the Day," by Herbert Grönemeyer with Malian duo Amadou & Mariam), the album should ostensibly be the perfect accompaniment to any fan as he experiences the anxiety, elation, and almost inevitable heartbreak associated with watching his national team try to make its way through the most elite soccer competition in the world. But besides the aforementioned "officially recognized" songs, every other track on the record seems better equipped for a post-tournament memorial highlight reel. Since when did Kelly Clarkson's "Because of You," Annie Lennox's "Why," Toni Braxton's "Un-Break My Heart," and Barbra Streisand's "Woman in Love" inspire the great confidence and necessary rowdiness associated with the sport and needed to propel a team and its fans forward? Perhaps the creators of the album wanted to brace themselves and other soccer fans for the pain of inevitable defeat (after all, only one country will win the championship) by including songs that reflect the utter desolation that comes from a hard loss, or instead want to focus more on good sportsmanship and resilience (Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are," Whitney Houston's "One Moment in Time") than good, old-fashioned, in-your-face, jubilant ...
