John Wayne stars as the sheriff of a small western town who arrests a murderer and then must contend with the aggressive efforts of the killer's brother to free him before the state marshall arrives. Surrounding the town, the villains make repeated runs at the tiny jailhouse where their comrade is incarcerated. The sheriff is left to defend the territory almost single-handedly -- his only aid being a rag-tag crew of misfits, including a drunk, an old cripple, a saloon woman, and a singing teenager. The plot's tensions build to one of the most explosive finales in cinema history.

No-nonsense Texas border sheriff John T. Chance (John Wayne) fights off ruthless mercenary gunmen in order to keep a murderer in custody. A ragtag band of volunteers, consisting of a singing kid, a toothless old man, a recovering alcoholic, and a spunky woman, assist. Contains an interesting sing-along interlude among the group, and yes, the Duke participates.

Shot in Technicolor.

5 stars My Favorite Western
The box set DVD has a bright picture but it isn't cleaned up of black spots that occasionally appear. It is also cut for 16 by 9 TVs. So the original 2:25 to 1 has been changed. It doesnt hurt the movie but I expected the original aspect. On my large screen TV the film quality was lacking in spots. There are 8 reproductions of lobby cards and the Dell Comic book reproduced. There are no outakes except in the trailer where Rick Nelson speaks to you and Dean Martin voice is off screen. This was a major dissapointment for me. The second disc has 2 Features of Howard Hawks and a travel destination of the OLD TUSON Arizona Movie set, where this movie and others were filmed. I enjoyed learning about Old Tuscon. No additional out takes or bloobers or even an outake of The Dean Martin Show with John Wayne. Although this is one of my favorite movies of all time and my Favorite Western the DVD extras were not well thought out, so they were left out. I waited 47 years for this special and whomever was responsible for the DVD extras failed. I liked the lobby cards and The Comic Reproduction was a surprise. Another error was no commentary from Angie Dickenson !!! Comments by horror man John Carpenter. What a mistake not having Angie. Angie I love you!

5 stars part of a symphony
Have always loved this film even when I got it mixed up with El Dorado. Often considered a trilogy with Dorado and finally Rio Lobo, it is actually a tetrology starting with Red River. Different angles on similar plot, parallel characters, repeated dialogue (some originating in To Have And Have Not--especially from the woman, i.e. from Bacall's character), Walter Brennan in Red and Bravo (out of Have/Have Not) and even insistence on a young actor--Montgomery Clift, Ricky Nelson, James Caan, young Mitchum and Estrada as a partial foil and apprentice to Wayne. More than remakes, they are "progressions". From Red with no law except their own to a law that needs a drunk to bend the law to a law that is drunk that needs a maimed gunslinger deputy, to finally a law that is lawless in the finale, Rio Lobo. An older Howard Hawks has almost come full circle--very odd. Is this the director's lake of faith in the State--a return to "grass roots Democracy"? I repeat, very odd. Or maybe I'm the one that is odd. Watch Red River, then Rio Bravo, then El Dorado and lastly Rio Lobo (that's a lot of water). Then go back to To Have And Have Not for the real genesis of so much of the this Hawks tetrology. Watch the John Ford cavalry trilogy, look for the same kind of looking at the same vase from different angles--I don't think that you will that that is the case there.

5 stars Classic movie by Howard Hawks and the Duke.
A Classic Western written and directed by Howard Hawks and starring the Duke at his zenith as an actor. Great supporting performances by Dean Martin and the always entertaining Walter Brennan. A morality play about self reliance and good vs. evil. Hawks is also at his zenith as a director opening the movie with plenty of action and not a word of dialogue for over five minutes. Hawks takes the successful formula of Red River and weaves together a cast of entertaining characters you can watch for hours. You will watch this movie more than once.

Loosely based on the 1960 Rat Pack film of the same name, OCEAN'S 11 is a hi-tech crime comedy that features a top-notch cast. Con man Danny Ocean (George Clooney) has just been released from a four-year jail term and decides that his first order of business is robbing three Las Vegas casinos owned by the slimy Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia). To pull off this nearly impossible task, he quickly assembles an eclectic crew--including a card shark (Brad Pitt), a pickpocket (Matt Damon), an explosives expert (Don Cheadle), and an aging gambler (Carl Reiner)--and seeks financial backing from a freewheeling casino mogul (Elliott Gould) who holds a grudge against Benedict. However, it soon becomes apparent that Ocean has more at stake than money and his newly found freedom--his ex-wife, Tess (Julia Roberts), just happens to be Benedict's new girlfriend. Can Ocean steal back Tess's heart and more than a hundred million dollars at the same time? Continuing an impressive streak of films that began with OUT OF SIGHT and THE LIMEY and exploded into even wider acclaim and popularity with ERIN BROCKOVICH and TRAFFIC, Steven Soderbergh helms this star-studded caper flick with a strong sense of style and ...

Former video store clerk Quentin Tarantino's directorial debut, RESERVOIR DOGS, is a brutally funny, supercharged introduction to his supremely distinct cinematic vision, which was later to become one of the most mimicked styles of the 1990s. Mastermind Joe Cabot (Lawrence Tierney) assembles a crew of top-notch criminals to pull off a jewelry store heist. As the film opens it becomes immediately clear that the plan backfired, forcing the survivors, who have gathered at an abandoned warehouse, to figure out if one of them is, in fact, a police informer. The crew--Mr. ...

This delightful gimmick film from producer-director William Castle stars Vincent Price as Dr. Chapin, a scientist who discovers a caterpillarlike parasite that grows in the human spine when someone is afraid and that, unless they scream, can grow large enough to kill them. He solemnly dubs this creature the tingler. Philip Coolidge plays the owner of a nearby cinema who befriends the doctor and whose deaf-mute wife suddenly receives all sorts of shocks, like the sight of a bathtub full of blood with a hand reaching ...

Opening with spectacular aerial shots of a beautiful, mountainous landscape, Stanley Kubrick's horror classic THE SHINING sucks the viewer into his frightening tale with quiet, relaxing visuals--but the ominous soundtrack warns that all is not right at the gorgeous Overlook Hotel. Based on Stephen King's best-selling novel, the film stars Jack Nicholson at his eyebrow-raising best in his portrayal of Jack Torrance, a Vermont schoolteacher working at the Overlook as a winter caretaker. The glorious early-20th century resort only operates in warm weather because the snowy roads deny access in the colder months, so Jack brings his wife, Wendy (Shelley Duvall), with him, as well as his young son, Danny (Danny Lloyd), who possesses some unique psychic powers. As the Torrances settle in for the long, lonely months ahead, strange, unexplainable things ...

East meets West and kung-fu legends collide as Jackie Chan and Jet Li square off in the fists-a-flying, family-friendly FORBIDDEN KINGDOM. Based on the classical Chinese novel JOURNEY TO THE WEST, the film begins in modern-day Boston. There, while teenage kung-fu flick enthusiast Jason (Michael Angarano) is buying bootleg DVDs from his favorite shopkeeper, Old Hop (Chan, aged by prosthetic makeup), he is drawn to an ancient golden staff. When a local bully forces weakling Jason to help rob Old Hop, Jason escapes with the staff and is magically transported to ancient China. He is soon rescued from the forces of the Jade Warlord by Lu Yan (Chan), a raggedy wanderer whose wine-guzzling ways conceal his kung-fu mastery. Yan reveals the truth of the staff, and that Jason is the fabled Seeker who must return it to the Monkey King (Li) to prevent the warlord's evil plans. The two are joined in their quest by a kung-fu master, Silent Monk (Li), and ...
