| | Robben Ford Soul On Ten CD (2009)
Piano
$15.29 Personnel: Robben Ford (vocals, guitar); Neal Evans (Hammond b-3 organ); Toss Panos (drums). Audio Mixer: John Paterno. Photographer: George Wells. Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy generated by the stage environment, focuses attention on the guitarist's skills as a creative six-string bluesman who expands the narrow confines of the genre by adding soul and jazz influences. He kicks off the set with a lazy, wah-wah enhanced "Supernatural," the title track to his 1999 disc, and revs up the energy from there, jumping into the instrumental "Indianola." This is where Ford seamlessly combines rock, blues, jazz, and surf into a five-minute tour de force, leading one to believe that a vocal-free show might display his superb guitar talents even better. Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, and first live CD in about a decade (although there have been some concert DVDs during that time), Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy generated by the stage environment, focuses attention on the guitarist's skills as a creative six-string bluesman who expands the somewhat narrow confines of the genre by adding soul and jazz influences. | | Vince Guaraldi In Person CD (1963)
Piano
$8.49 Personnel: Vince Guaraldi (piano); Eddie Duran (guitar); Fred Marshall (bass); Colin Bailey (drums); Benny Velarde (percussion). Recorded at The Trident, Sausalito, California on December 4, 1962. Originally released on Fantasy (8352). Includes liner notes by Ralph J. Gleason. Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1997, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Personnel: Vince Guaraldi (piano); Eddie Duran (guitar); Colin Bailey (drums); Benny Velarde (scratches). Audio Remasterer: Kirk Felton. Liner Note Author: Ralph J. Gleason. Recording information: Trident, Sausalito, CA (12/1962). Unknown Contributor Roles: Colin Bailey; Eddie Duran; Fred Marshall; Benny Velarde; Vince Guaraldi. A followup to his surprise hit album Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus, this is Guaraldi at his most winning, alternating between a straight jazz trio and the fast bossa nova groove of a Latin-ized quintet. Nothing fancy, just irresistible melodic swinging in either format, although it is the bossa treatments that particularly grab the listener's heart and feet. Best in the set are "Outra Vez," where Vince calmly savors ...

| | Paths Of Possession Promises In Blood CD (2005)
Piano
$9.69 Paths of Possession: Jay Fossen, Jack Goodwin (guitar); Randy Butman (baritone guitar, background vocals); Nick Goodyear (drums); George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher. Personnel: George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher (vocals); Jay Fossen (guitar); Nick Goodyear (drums); Randy Butman (background vocals). Recording information: Mana Recording Studios; Razzor Media, St. Petersburg, FL. Death metal didn't originate in Scandinavia any more than jazz originated in New York City; the blues originated in Chicago; or Afro-Cuban son, mambo, guaguancó, and cha cha originated in Puerto Rico. But just as the Big Apple became synonymous with jazz, Chicago became a blues mecca and Puerto Ricans became major players in Afro-Cuban music, death metal/black metal is now closely identified with the Scandinavian countries. That is true of the ultra-harsh, totally unforgiving stuff as well as the more nuanced approach known as melodic death metal (which is closely related to symphonic black metal). But saying that melodic death metal has been a largely Nordic phenomenon in the '90s and 21st century isn't saying that it has become an exclusively Nordic phenomenon -- and on Promises in Blood, Florida's Paths of Possession remind listeners that there is no reason why American moshers shouldn't continue to participate. One shouldn't forget that before Sweden and Norway became such crucial players in death metal/black metal, Florida was the home of producer Scott Burns and sledgehammer bands like Deicide, Obituary, Death, Malevolent Creation, Possessed, and Cannibal Corpse. In fact, the lead singer on this 2005 release is none other than George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher of Cannibal Corpse fame. But Promises in Blood isn't nearly as extreme as the grindcore that put Cannibal Corpse on the map. Fisher's vocals on this CD are generally a deep, guttural, demonic growl, but this time he is bringing his growl to songs that have real song structures and honest to God melodies. While Cannibal Corpse favorites like Butchered at Birth and Eaten Back to Life are exercises in brutality for the sake of brutality, Paths of Possession are -- for all their heaviness and intensity ...
