Yoyocuts
$13.59 With a boost from Pete Tong's radio show, wunderkind Deadmau5 (aka Joel Zimmerman) has made his presence felt in the progressive house scene. This 2009 mix album compiles previously released and unreleased tracks, sequenced and segued like one of Deadmau5's exciting live spots. The spare aggression of "FML" is a dramatic kickoff to a collection that demonstrates Zimmerman's skill in manipulating moods. A funereal organ theme runs through both the playful "Moar Ghosts n Stuff" and its powerful companion track, "Ghosts n Stuff" (featuring ...
| | Asking Alexandria Stand Up And Scream CD (2009)
Yoyocuts
$11.49 The flurry of post-hardcore activity in the `00s is a formidable area to keep tabs on, even for hardened fans of heavy music; new hybrids continue to redefine the genre making for ever more unlikely, previously inconceivable, combinations. Enter U.K.-based unit Asking Alexandria, who blend screamo's angst-ridden intensity with the epic synthscapes and club-styled beats of trance-electronica. The band's debut, STAND UP AND SCREAM, true to its title, offers a lot of screaming (of the now standard melodic, emo-influenced variety), contrasted with growling (of the now standard metalcore variety), garnished with ...

| | Jem Finally Woken CD (2004)
Yoyocuts
$9.69 FINALLY WOKEN marks the recording debut of Welsh singer/songwriter Jem Griffiths. With a voice that brings to mind Beth Orton and songs that sometimes echo the poppier aspects of atmospheric electronic acts such as Air and Royksopp, Jem unveils tunes that are custom-made for lounge, cafe, and bedroom listening. The breezy title track floats on gentle ocean sounds and a light acoustic guitar line, while the slightly upbeat "They" glides on funky rhythms and a vintage Swingle Singers vocal sample. Mixing up the chill-out vibe, however, are dramatic, guitar-driven songs such as "Come On Closer" and "Falling for You." FINALLY WOKEN's highlight, though, is the amazingly infectious "Just a Ride," a joyous ode to carefree living. Given her confident singing and the eclectic mix of styles presented on this album, Jem should easily appeal to fans of Orton, Dido, and Sarah McLachlan.
Additional personnel includes: Yoad Nevo (various instruments).
Producers: Yoad Nevo, Jem Griffiths, Ge-ology.
Personnel: Yoad Nevo (acoustic guitar, ...
| | Daft Punk Human After All CD (2005)
Yoyocuts
$11.35 Recorded in less than two months, HUMAN AFTER ALL, the third studio album by the French duo of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, gives off an immediate electronic rush. The opening title track, with its wonderfully distorted synthesizers and robotic vocals, might make listeners question whether humans created any of these sounds, but, chances are, they'll be too busy dancing to care. The most notable change in the Daft Punk aesthetic is the heavier presence of guitars (all played by de Homem-Christo and Bangalter), ...
| | Amethystium Aphelion CD (2003)
Yoyocuts
$14.45 Aphelion is the point where a planet or any celestial body is furthest from the sun. While this must be pretty dark place, Amethystium breathes light into the shadows. Amethystium is Oystein Ramfjord, a Norwegian composer who shapes elements of electronica and darkwave, evoking classic Tangerine Dream and Kitaro. This is the follow-up album to ODONATA, Ramfjord's acclaimed debut. Voices figure prominently into each song's construction. Often ethereal and wordless, these sound forms give a great depth and haunting quality to the music, while the only discernible lyrics are found on "Autumn Interlude." Amidst pitch shifting and electronic squall, guest vocalist Joyelle Brandt soars, recalling the powerful collaboration between Sarah McLachlan ...
| | Quango Brazilified CD (2001)
Yoyocuts
$9.99 Far too many attempts at ethno-techno fusion fall flat simply because the balance between the two genres -- the exotic traditional sounds of foreign cultures and the synthesized sounds of electronic music -- isn't quite right. But the latest compilation effort from Quango Records mastermind Bruno Guez perfectly straddles the line between the two, with 11 songs forming a seamless blend of the past and the present, the traditional and the experimental. There's not a bad track in the bunch, from the haunting flutes, bottomless bass, and percolating percussion of Butti49's opening "Brasilikum" to the Deee-lite-gone-Brazilian disco beats of Nova Frontiera's high-energy "Abra a Boca." Highlights include Friends From Rio's addictively danceable "Escravos Do Jo," with its insistent rhythms, catchy vocal hook, and surging strings; Jazzanova's "Fedime's Flight," with its intricately syncopated percussion, retro organs, and old-school vocals; and Easydelics' sizzling "Berimbau de Ossanha," with its Spanish-style ...
