$12.79 No one knows just what would happen if Scott McCaughey happened to have a few weeks to himself with nothing to do musically, largely because he seems determined to prevent that from ever happening. An example: in January 2000, while McCaughey was waiting out the delays that postponed the release of the Minus 5/Young Fresh Fellows split album Let the War Against Music Begin, he got word that the much-loved Chicago venue Lounge Ax was going to close, and he joined the parade of artists who took to their stage during the club's final weeks. Since the "real" Minus 5 lineup couldn't make the trip, McCaughey persuaded his pals in Wilco to back him up, and on-stage they plowed through a set of new songs he wrote for the occasion without a single rehearsal. Following this baptism of fire, McCaughey decided the tunes merited another chance with the more traditional Minus 5 lineup, and so on March 13, 2000, he rolled into a recording studio with Peter Buck, John Ramberg, and Bill Rieflin, and bashed ten of his Lounge Ax tunes onto tape. McCaughey called the results In Rock, and a limited edition of 1,000 copies were ...

$12.39 With so many female vocalists releasing new jazz CDs in a given year, it is extremely difficult to grab one's attention; Amanda Carr's third CD, though released by a small label, has the ingredients necessary to do so. Carr is gifted with a pleasant voice, terrific diction and the ability to pick a wide-ranging program that neither skews to overly familiar standards or a heavy dose of originals. Accompanied by a fine trio led by veteran guitarist John Wilkins (with bassist Bronek Suchanek and drummer Kenny Hadley), her intensity comes across immediately in the stunning opener, "Never Will I Marry." Wilkins' superb guitar and guest Dick Johnson's perky alto sax underscore her lighthearted interpretation of Rodgers & Hart's "Do It the Hard Way." Carr delivers a swinging take of Duke Ellington's infrequently performed "Tulip or Turnip," with a smoking tenor sax solo added by Arnie Krakowsky. Suchanek's burning arco bass (together with Wilkins) introduce her exotic rendition of Abbey Lincoln's powerful "Throw It Away." She also makes her mark as a composer, offering the lively bop vehicle "I Couldn't Live Without You" (jointly written with Suchanek). Amanda Carr deserves greater attention in the jazz world. ~ Ken Dryden

Carr was a guest on my late 1990’s talk show on WRKO, where she showed incredible poise by singing with nothing but acoustic guitar accompaniment. Her voice is like a soft blanket that surrounds you and instantly ...
