| | Maxwell Now CD (2001)
Evolution album
$8.89 "Lifetime" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. Romance remains the main ingredient found in this Brooklyn native's banquet of song, and although he stands firmly in the neo-soul camp of D'Angelo and Erykah, his use of various stylistic nuances once again stamps him as an original item. Twangy country-flavored licks and subtle DJ scratches pop up throughout the lament "Was My Girl," and scratchy rock guitar riffs are sparingly used over the heavy groove of "Temporary Nite." At the centerpiece is a studio version of Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work," a staple of Maxwell's concerts previously showcased on the live 1997 EP UNPLUGGED. Delivered with a crystalline falsetto, delicate strings and subtle pedal steel, it's a daring move worthy of Prince-ly accolades.
Elsewhere, Maxwell easily moves between sly funk (a percolating "Get To Know Ya") and sleek, between-the-sheets posturing (the Isley Brothers-flavored "Changed"). ...
| | Best Of The Gap Band CD (1995)
Evolution CD music
$11.99 A collection from the Mercury funk lineup that covers the hits from the first five Gap Band albums. Every major hit that they had is included here. What one might notice is that all of the major hits ("You Dropped a Bomb on Me," "Burn Rubber on Me," "Early in the Morning," and "I Don't Believe You Want to Get up and Dance") all sound surprisingly similar. This may or may not be a large surprise to everyone, but the bright note about their similarity is that the basic riffs and rhythms that they all use are extremely catchy. The energy that the Gap Band exudes in the midst of producing a song is stunning, and this compilation displays that to the fullest extent. For a basic introduction to the forms of funk that the Gap Band followed, this album would certainly suit any given listener. For those who only need one Gap Band album in their collection, this one also fits the bill perfectly. For die-hard fans who already have all of the band's albums, this one would probably only really serve as a summary. ~ Adam Greenberg

| | Best Of Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra CD (1995)
Evolution songs
$12.59 This is part of the PolyGram Chronicles Funk Essentials series.
The Best of the Love Unlimited Orchestra collects 15 tracks by Barry White's groundbreaking instrumental support outfit. Their sound as assembled by White -- thick layers of sweet strings, pulsing beats, chunky wah-wah guitars, plus tinkling piano and gently swelling horns -- played a huge role in creating the blueprint for disco, not to mention countless porn soundtracks. In addition to backing White and his female protégées Love Unlimited, the Love Unlimited Orchestra also made their own recordings, naturally with White at the helm. Although they recorded up to 1983, their commercial heyday lasted from 1974-1977, when they charted regularly on the pop, R&B, and disco/club listings. They even scored a number one pop hit right out of the box with 1974's "Love's ...
| | Lighthouse Family Ocean Drive CD (1995)
Evolution album
$10.59 Ocean Drive, the debut album from the London-based duo Lighthouse Family, is a modest, but extremely pleasant affair that makes for excellent rainy-day listening. While some may find Paul Tucker and Tunde Baiyewu's song stylings a little too soft rock for their taste, the smooth guitar chords and quiet percussion quickly become addictive. Not to mention the album's best tunes, "Lifted" and "Ocean Drive," are virtually guaranteed to buoy one's spirits. "Ocean Drive" is particularly transporting; if you close your eyes and let your mind wander while listening to this track, you can almost feel yourself driving along the coast, the wind in your hair and your responsibilities left behind. The other songs aren't quite on the same level, but they are still fun to listen to. "Loving Every Minute" features some great trumpet backup from "Tim Kellett," and the drums on "Keep Remembering" and "Sweetest Operator" certainly get your feet tapping. The album ends on a high note with "Goodbye Heartbreak," a song about love and loss that makes a nice bookend to the upbeat first track, "Lifted." With the exception of these two songs and "Ocean Drive," the weakest aspect of the record is the lyrics, which range from the forgettable to the inscrutable. Fortunately, lead singer Baiyewu possesses such a strong voice, you can treat it as another instrument and tune out what he is actually saying. The group's real strength is the music anyway. A great album to put on while you're reading or just sitting quietly by yourself. ~ Ethan Alter

| | Clearlake Almost The Same CD (2003) Extended Play
Evolution songs
$6.39 The Almost the Same EP from Clearlake finds the English band tweaking its sonic pop goodness. Like their 2001 studio effort, Lido, Clearlake craft a delightful indie pop sound polished with a Brit-pop gloss; however, Almost the Same gets heavy for their most brilliant listen yet. Clearlake are emotionally romantic and overly sensitive like the Smiths, but ...

| | Paul Wall Get Money, Stay True CD (2007) Parental Advisory
Evolution CD music
$15.49 After the huge success of his 2005 major label debut, THE PEOPLE'S CHAMP, would Paul Wall make good on what the title of his follow-up promises? While it's true that the legendary Houston rapper and industry player has made room for a wide range of big-name guest stars (with Dirty South favorites sharing air time with both east- and west-coast representatives), he's still working the same proven system: heavy low-end bass tracks crossed with drawn-out and slurred southern rhyme schemes.
A major part of Wall's staying true lies in his ability to get all the artists on the varied guest list (including Yung Redd, Lil Keke, E Class, Freeway Jon B, KLC, Juelz Santana, and Snoop Dogg) to find their place within his distinct H-Town format. Aside from the Jermaine Dupri-produced ...
