| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
Areas Quarters
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive ...

$6.69 Just when you thought it was safe to jettison your anti-grav go-go boots...The SG Sound whips up the new party smash Planet Twist! This EP features the radio single Planet Twist plus remasters from THE PLEASURE CENTER (editor's top pick in space age pop) and the upcoming space travel a-go-go epic ESCAPADE VELOCITY. Think of it as an in-flight sample platter for those who still harbor the delusion that resistance to The SG Sound is all but futile, and a light snack for those already down with the now sound. It's the SG Sound's world, you just twist in it... cheeky baby yeah!Heavily influenced by go-go, twist, surf, spy, lounge, TV underscore, and soul music of the mid-to-late 1960's, The SG Sound might be described by some as ...
| | Arrington De Dionyso I See Beyond The Black Sun CD (2008) Bonus Track
Areas Quarters
$12.19 When taking breaks from Old Time Relijun, artist/musician Arrington de Dionyso conducts what can best be described as solo sound experiments. BLACK SUN finds him channeling his favorite intimate instrument: his voice--except that de Dionyso explores his range via the drones of Tuvan throat singing, in addition to incorporating jaw harps and bass clarinets. The results tend to work best as meditative therapy on clarinet-heavy tracks like "Into Gardens," although listeners' jaws will drop when they hear de Dionyso dig down into his esophagus on "The Naked Future Part One," resembling something ghostly and artificial all at once.
On his ninth solo record and second for K Records, Arrington de Dionyso continues his exploration of Tuvan throat singing. Fans of his Gypsy punk/indie rock three-piece Old Time Relijun may have heard him warming up his voice at live shows with a constipated Popeye impression, and for I See Beyond the Black Sun, he fills the entire disc with similar-sounding vocal exercises. By doing away with some of the more freewheeling tracks of reckless horn solos that cluttered the last album and focusing primarily on the human voice instead, the experience is a bit more meditative, but that doesn't make it much less difficult. Essentially, it is what it is -- de Dionyso employing a warbling baritone groan over a few backing layers of drones (courtesy of a bass clarinet and jaw harp) for nearly 40 minutes. Fans of De Dionyso's other solo work, especially the self-titled track and "White Fire Black Fire," from 2006's Breath of Fire, will not find this much of a departure, but as slow-moving as it is, it's doubtful that this release has any crossover potential for collectors of the K Records catalog or even die-hard fans of Old Time Relijun.
